A Francophiles frank observations.
John Burningham's insightful and delightful look at France is from one who has crossed the Channel and "treats France with an unsentimental affection, like a good friend you've known all your life and never really understood..." is just as Michael Palin describes. Burningham's years of creating award winning picture books shines in this entertainingly illustrated and...

Opinion of a French Student who lives in the US!
This collection of sketches (reminiscent of a children's book), photos, collages, poems and quotes depicts French life and customs as seen through the eyes of a foreigner. It is obvious that the author is not a native to the country; while it portrays true aspects of France, it also conveys all the usual stereotypes. The description of these clichés is funny and...

A Francophiles frank observations., February 13, 2011
This review is from: John Burningham's France (Hardcover)
John Burningham's insightful and delightful look at France is from one who has crossed the Channel and "treats France with an unsentimental affection, like a good friend you've known all your life and never really understood..." is just as Michael Palin describes. Burningham's years of creating award winning picture books shines in this entertainingly illustrated and written work on a country whose culture many of us admire but few of us outsiders truly manage to understand. It is cultural appreciation with all of it's foibles, providing illustrations that bring the culture's greatness, hypocritical humanity and our outside stereotypes to terms. A very fun read indeed!

This review is from: John Burningham's France (Hardcover)
This collection of sketches (reminiscent of a children's book), photos, collages, poems and quotes depicts French life and customs as seen through the eyes of a foreigner. It is obvious that the author is not a native to the country; while it portrays true aspects of France, it also conveys all the usual stereotypes. The description of these clichés is funny and makes the book enjoyable to read; however, the reader should recognize that France is much more than this.
