Book Description

October 15, 2010
This Purple Rose book is a collection of the first five stories in Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom series: A Princess of Mars (1917), The Gods of Mars (1918), The Warlord of Mars (1919), Thuvia, Maid of Mars (1920) and The Chessmen of Mars (1922). It contains all of the original frontispieces by Frank Schoonover and J. Allen St. John, enhanced and enlarged and is a high quality book with clear formatting and detailed contents. Visit Purple Rose at www.purplerosebooks.com and view our other titles and new releases. John Carter is the hero of Burroughs' Barsoom series. He first appeared in Under the Moons of Mars (later retitled A Princess of Mars) the story which catapaulted Burroughs into the limelight. It was the first of many novels and several sequels followed over the next three decades, further extending Burroughs' vision of Barsoom. The world of Barsoom is a romantic vision of a dying Mars, based on now outdated scientific ideas made popular by Astronomer Percival Lowell in the early 20th century. While depicting many outlandish inventions, and advanced technology, it is a savage, 'frontier' world, of honor, noble sacrifice and constant struggle, where martial prowess is paramount, and where many races fight over dwindling resources. It is filled with lost cities, heroic adventures and undiscovered ancient secrets. The series has inspired a number of well known science fiction writers, and also key scientists involved in both space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life. It has informed and been adapted by many writers, in novels, short stories, television and film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection, Burroughs is a genius December 16, 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this John Carter of Mars collection a few weeks ago. Full contents and page numbers are there, it is very well put together and easy to read.

I have read some Burroughs before and loved them and was recommended the Barsoom series by a friend. This collection is exactly what I wanted, all 5 stories, all the original illustrations, well formatted, nice cover, good background information. It might take me a while to get through it though, it's a pretty big book, but Burroughs is a fantastic writer and it is very fast paced so I'm still enjoying it. The worlds he creates are something else, I think authors like Philip Pullman and Terry Pratchett must have been influenced by Burroughs, his works came a long time before anything else of its kind and they are so vivid and full of detail, incredible really.

Looking forward to the film, hope it does the book justice.

45 years ago in Jr. High School I read all of Edgar Rice Burrough's John Carter on Mars Sci Fi/fantasy series books. I loved them all. All 5 stars

To add to our family library I was looking for a leather bound book with a collection of his best John Carter books. I couldn't find one. Instead I bought this big paperback book. Great colored front with cover illustration of 5 of his best John Carter books. Included A Princess Of Mars, The Gods Of Mars, The Warlord of Mars, Thuvia Maid Of Mars, and the Chessman of Mars. All are 5 stars. There are several great B/W illustrations from the original books.

On Mars (Barsoom) Captain, John Carter, Virginian end of Civil War is mysteriously teleported to Mars after being chased into a cave by a bunch of Indians in western US. ERB uses his fantastic imagination to create an entire living world on dieing Mars (Barsoom). We see the various warlike races of red ,green, yellow, and black Martians, their Jeddick(kings), Jeds, Princess, giant white apes, Martian lions, giant 10 legged thoats ( vicious huge horse like creatures) and more. Vast armies and navies with marvelous technology using rays we don't have on Earth. The Martians can live about a thousand years although most die much younger from warfare. War, and assassination seem to be the number 1 and 2 occupations.

John Carter meets Dejah Thoris beautiful Princess of Helium. He eventually marries her and they have a waring son and a princess daughter. John Carter is a master swordsman with his long sword and a born fighter able to easily jump 30 feet with his Earth muscles against Mar's lesser gravity and air pressure. His son is similarly blessed with partial Earth muscles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary sci-fi romp July 14, 2011
Format:Paperback
A sci-fi extravaganza of gargantuan proportions! A real fantasy novel with everything you would ever want in there. The catalyst for Star Wars, Avatar and so many other classic sci-fi films which were all heavily influenced by Edgar Rice Burroughs and his John Carter of Mars books. A Princess of Mars is still the all time classic it once was, the only of the original stories I had read before. The saga develops into extraoridnary depths as the books go on until you feel like you know the planet (Mars/Barsoom) yourself. John Carter "a splendid specimen of manhood" indeed. What a stonker of a book!

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful blast from the past February 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
My Dad introduced my brothers and I to this series of books when we were children, dimestore novels that he'd purchased when he himself was younger. I thoroughly enjoyed reading them then, and reading them again now is an equally enjoyable experience. Obviously technology since these stories were written has proven that there are no tribes of martian warriors or red men wandering the barren deserts of Mars, but all it takes is a little imagination and suspension of disbelief to still enjoy these books. I'm sure they won't appeal to everyone, but if you are a fan of action and adventure stories in a science fiction setting, I highly recommend this collection.

After the book arrived, I was very pleased to how fast the book shipped, and how the book was designed. The nice thing about the book, is that it is large like a text book.

5.0 out of 5 stars welcome back, John Carter ! December 9, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read so many of Burroughs books as a teenage boy ; it's easy to get lost in the worlds he creates and caught up in the heroes and characters he fills these worlds with. Now , finally , I see that Disney is going to release "John Carter of Mars " as a movie in 2012.
Totally Awesome!!!! That's something I've wanted to hear for years! These books really are worthy of being brought to the big screen.
So, of course, after hearing that the movie will be out in March of 2012, I decided to refresh my memory with Captain Carter's exploits. This book really fills the bill: it includes the first five of the books in one volume . You'll be up reading late into the night..... The price is very reasonable, and the original cover art is a real bonus. Now , let's hope that Purple Rose Publishing will release the remaining seven books as a companion volume. Let's also hope that Disney does justice to the books when they make the movie; I am especially interested in seeing the giant, green, four-armed Tars Tarkas, Jed of the Tharks. Thank you for making it easy to collect these books again.
