Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6-10-Beginning with his upbringing in small-town North Carolina in the segregated South through his move to Philadelphia as a young man and his later emergence as a professional jazz musician, this biography emphasizes Coltrane's love of music and intense spirituality. He studied and played the saxophone with other jazz bop greats in the '40s, '50s, and '60s and is best known for his innovative improvisations, which derived from the music of Latin America, Africa, and India. Although some details of his personal life are glossed over, readers will appreciate Coltrane's struggles and the contributions he made to the evolution of jazz, an American cultural phenomenon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed, April 29, 2007
This review is from: John Coltrane: Jazz Revolutionary (Masters of Music) (Library Binding)
I love John Coltrane's music, and wanted to learn more about his life--what brought him to such heights and lows. Unfortunately, this book was too poorly executed to help me. It does present basic facts, but the authror's use of grammar is weak, and her construction is poorly thoughtout.

I hope this book was written for children, but I also hope those kids master English better than the author.
