an astonishingly good ending to an amazing story,

If you want a seminal, mind blowing but stand-alone Hellblazer story, Mike Carey's "All His Engines" is the place to start. This series is 3 or 4 trades long and comprises one of the best comic book stories I've ever read. This is the last chapter, which ends Mike Carey's run, and it left me simultaneously depressed that there would be no more and amazed that anyone would try and pick up where this leaves off. I couldn't recommend this strongly enough, though I would suggest starting with 'Red Sepulchre'.
