Mr. French has written an in-depth look at one of the most complicated men of the English and European Renaissance, and still managed to make his work accessible to the non-scholastic reader. John Dee is widely misunderstood these days, largely by re-enactors, I am sorry to say, presented as either a "magician" or as primarily an astrologer. As a re-enactor myself, I found the book very useful and insightful in trying to round out my presentation of Dr. Dee as both a mathematical and philosophical genius as well as a conflicted man trying to make his way among people who had no way of "getting" the depth of his learning and multiple fields of expertise.
