Perfect Replacement, but with a design flaw
on May 25, 2013
The replacement deck is an EXACT replacement for the original on the LA105. It uses some of the same deck suspension parts from the old deck, but is otherwise complete. Unfortunately it did not last long. I lightly bumped into a hidden stump earlier today and encountered the exact same damage as what did the original one in. Where the blade shaft bearing boxes attach to the mower deck, the metal is thin and not reinforced in any way, while the bearing boxes themselves are very sturdy. The mismatch in strength is such that the metal of the mower deck will easily give if the blades encounter anything substantial. The last time this happened the blades hit a small mound of soil. So now I've got a mower deck with less than 10 hours on it that is irreparably bent, requiring another complete deck replacement. The design problem has to do with the way the bearing boxes mount and the non-frangible design of the boxes themselves. Previous riding mowers I have had were designed so that the deck was stronger than the bearing boxes and the boxes or the shafts inside them would bend before the deck housing would. I won't replace it again and I'm probably out of the conventional rinding lawn mower business and definitely moving away from John Deere products.
