Best Book Ever
We purchased a 1978 JD Model 2040 tractor from a JD dealer. Over time we got two different operators manuals from the dealer for that year and model; neither matched our dash design. We ordered this book from Amazon.com and it was exactly what we needed. It even showed how to use the PTO, which the dealer's copies did not. This is the Best Book Ever.

JD 2040 book
This is not an owners manual it is a shop manual, it has very technical information if you are planning on serious work. I purchased the owners manual from the JD website. It is excellent, it is the only book I will ever need.

The detail for major overhaul jobs are fine however for the more simple and basic jobs (oil change, carburetor work, etc) it lacks information and detail. I needed to put a carburetor kit in my 2510 and the information on the settings was there but the re-build diagram was not. Oil and fluid capacity is not in the book that I found either.

I bought a 79 John Deere 4040, when the time comes for doing repair work, from what I have seen it will be quiet helpful.
I am not a mechanic by trade but believe it will be as as well used as the Chilton books for both of my old Cheyrolets.

My husband is a heavy equipment mechanic on mostly big CAT machines. They do have a few smaller John Deere machines. He needed specs on an engine for a JD. This book was exactly what he needed, along with a lot of other tech info that he can reference in the future. Great book!
