5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This Game!
This game is not for everyone, I have to say. But I loved it! It is a farm sim where you plant and harvest a variety of crops, raise livestock, hire workers, build farm buidlings, and buy John Deere farm equipment.

I have lived in the city my whole life, but I also enjoy simulation and strategy games. I also like finances and accounting. For those who are...

Well I was pretty excited to see that John Deere did a sequel to the American Farmer. The original lacked good graphics and got pretty boring after awhile. I was hoping that North American Farmer would be better, sadly I was disappointed.

When I uploaded it I noticed the graphics were a bit better but lacked a true attention to detail. The animals were always hard to see unless you were zoomed way in, the tractor wheels are not round and don't roll (the new equipment wheels do roll)and thier movement was always unnatural. Also, the characters just appeared to be a bunch of un educated hicks. This all remains the same in the sequel. Sure they added a few hard to see animals and you have a few more options on buldings but over all it's more of the same.

I don't want you to get the wrong idea about this, I do like the game but it does have a few issues. The hay, although a neat option is very time consuming and requires alot of attention, it would be nice to be able to automate this since you have to switch impliments constantly, and it looks more like corn growing than hay. The cool part is that somehow it ends up storing hay even though you sell it and makes for a nice bonus, I am sure this is a glitch. You still cannot move the fence (or pastures) past trees which I always found odd and there is no way to get rid of the trees or plant new ones. The game speed went from 1x, 2x, 3x to 1x, 3x, and 5x. I always played the original on 2x, but 3x now is way too fast, I don't know how anyone could keep up and 1x is just too slow. When raking hay, the raking starts in front of the tractor! When baling and you make a turn 1/4 of the next row disappears! I did have one funny part when I tried to unload an impliment from the pole barn. The tractor just went into an endless loop and constantly tried to remove the equipment, then shot across the screen like a bolt of lightening. A pain but funny none the less.

Overall it is pretty disapointing that Bold games didn't take the time to fix alot of the stuff that stunk in the first game and make it more of an adult game rather than a kids game.

For those who are looking for action packed, fighting games this title may not be for you.

I liked how simple this game was to learn, yet the challenges make it worth staying. You deal with weather and bugs that can destroy your crops. You struggle with debt (that can be overcome with patience and work) and trying to time the in-game market to buy livestock at the right price as well as sell livestock and the crops you have stored at the right time.

This game is not terribly elaborate, but according to my cousins who live on a farm and a friend who has an animal science degree, this game is quite realistic in terms of running a farm.

So if you are looking for a game that gives you a realistic farm experience, this one is the best I have played. It is fairly inexpensive, too, which is nice. A great way to spend some free hours!

I bought this for my 16 year old son for Christmas. We don't live on a farm but my son has always been interested in farming. He loves the game and plays it often. My 45 year old brother even plays this game and says he would like one for himself.

If you love the land and farming this is the game for you. My son plays it every day and the game hasn't gotten old in months. This game is a little difficult when you first start but once you get the hang of it, it is a lot of fun.

I ordered this for our seven year old grandson but he has not been able to use it yet. There should be a hard copy of the instructions included. I am not real computer savey so it would make it a lot easier for us novices! Amazon continues to be the BEST place to order just about anything. Always great service at great prices!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the little John Deere nut!, January 25, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: John Deere North American Farmer (CD-ROM)
My son has been haying with his grandpa since he was six months old and riding with our farmer neighbor for a couple of years doing grass seed and wheat, including riding in the IH Combine. He loves this game especially buying new equipment. A true farmer at heart, our six year old gives this a two thumbs up. After all he knows the difference between real and make believe and it is a way to pass time between harvests thats all, who cares about deatail as long as its fun?
