John Everett Millais (1829-96) is widely regarded as one of the most important artists of his generation. He was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and was later president of the Royal Academy of Arts. Less well-known are his 400 designs for illustrations, made over a period of 30 years. About the Author

Paul Goldman worked for the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum for 23 years. He is the author of Victorian Illustrated Books 1850-1870 (1994) and Victorian Illustration - The Pre-Raphaelites, The Idyllic School and the High Victorians (1996 and 2004). He is now an independent scholar and is currently an Associate Fellow at the Institute of English Studies, part of the School of Advanced Study of the University of London. Tessa Sidey is Curator of Prints and Drawings for Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery. She is the author of Editions Alecto: Original Graphics, Multiple Originals 1960-1981 (2003).
