Though much of this book is presented in a straight-forward manner, with much of JFK's childhood detailed with a simplistic innocence, it nevertheless touches on many of the themes which biographers of the entire Kennedy clan flesh out in the almost infinite array of Camelot-related books. Having spent several months last year working with a group of students with Intellectual Impairments who were given this book as part of their ELA curriculum, I found that the reading level was just challenging enough to ensure the students did not think it was a "children's book" and yet not so overwhelming that they struggled with half the words on each page. While this book can never be considered an authoritative biography of JFK, it nevertheless suggests many of the themes which impacted JFK's life (health-related struggles, "Duty, Honor, Country", family allegiances, struggles and successes, ...). The ten full page black and white illustrations and some smaller illustrations align with the simplistic prose--- just enough detail to convey a key idea or event, without confusing kids with extraneous visuals. Most of the students I worked with had never heard of JFK before reading this book, and after we finished reading it, a couple of kids asked: "What president are we reading about next?" For students who struggle mightily with ALL aspects of reading, I interpreted this as positive reactions to the book and, in fact, decided to purchase other books in this "Childhood of Famous Americans" series.... Both Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln may be in our future.

My son read this book for a book report for school. He is an advanced fourth grade reader and said the book was readable and interesting. He actually gave it 4 1/2 stars, but I didn't see a way to do that.

I love this book. It is so important for students to have some background information on important American figures. This is a great book in this series.
