Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Each title attempts to make clear the often-confusing story of creating a new nation. Hamilton, of $10-bill fame, was the first American Secretary of the Treasury. He began life in abject poverty and both he and his son were shot in separate duels by Jefferson's vice president, Aaron Burr. Jay, who was born into wealth and lived a long life, was the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Each similarly formatted title has short chapters teeming with illustrations. Both Jay and Hamilton held antislavery views. The same photograph of two escaped slaves appears in both books. Yet, duplication is minimal. Although there are several titles available about Hamilton, little is available on John Jay for this age group. Each book does a good job bringing to life these brilliant, forward-thinking men. Both portraits of these Founding Fathers will be useful for report writers and entertaining for browsers.
