Disappointing presention of an important American artist's work, March 13, 2009
This review is from: John Frederick Kensett: An American Master (Paperback)
The reproductions of landscape artist John Frederick Kensett's, body of work, in this 1985 retrospective, are unfortunately not of the highest quality. They are in fact a bit fuzzy, and also, not all of Kensett's important paintings are presented in color. His sketches are presented in miniscule size, which was a further disappointment.
On the plus side, the essays prepared by various museum curators and art historians are excellent, and very informative about Kensett's life and art.
While I enjoyed this book up to a point, I'm glad it was only a library-loan. If I had purchased this book, I would have lowered the "star" grade even further due to the somewhat sub-par reproduction of Kensett's work.

A wonderful find!, April 29, 2010
This review is from: John Frederick Kensett: An American Master (Paperback)
I think that SusieQ is spoiled for the quality of printing that we now enjoy in books that were more recently printed than 1985. When I found this book at a secondhand bookstore I flipped since it is such a rare and wonderful find. Maybe Yale will do a major publication some day. Wouldn't that be lovely!
