Our Favorite Halloween Picture Book,
By read-me-a-story (Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: John Pig's Halloween (Picture Puffin Books) (Paperback)
This is our family's favorite Halloween book, hands down! The story is great. The rhyme and meter actually work and sound great read aloud, and the pictures are amazing. We got it a few years ago, and my kids, now 6 and 11 BOTH still love it. And for us as parents, this one is one of the rare picture books we never get tired of reading over and over. I'm buying more for friends.

I fell in love with this book from the start. I loved how John Pig portrayed his feelings about Halloween. There was so many adorables pictures that you begin to see new things in the pictures that you didn't see before. The witch is great - My kids loved that idea that she was a fun witch. The food she made sounded heavenly... What a great book for kids.... My children adore this book as do I.

GREAT FOR READING ALOUD,
This review is from: John Pig's Halloween (Picture Puffin Books) (Paperback)
With fanciful rhyme and perfect meter Jan Waldron presents the ideal story for reading aloud. Hopefully, hearing the poems will encourage young listeners to look for more poetry and come to enjoy verse.
There is, of course, an attention getting story line - when a tiny pie-baking witch arrives, a shy porcine discovers that he can do most anything. An excellent lesson in confidence encourages young ones to put their fears behind them. David McPhail's robust illustrations carry the story along.

This review is from: John Pig's Halloween (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my daughter to celebrate Halloween. It is her favorite holiday so we read this book year round. The story is about a pig named John who is too scared to go trick or treating on Halloween with his friends. John stays back at the house as his friends go on without him. After they leave a real witch comes calling for some treats. When she sees that John only has candy to hand out she decides to teach hime how to make some real Halloween treats. They whip up such heavenly connoctions as pies, tarts, mousse, sundaes, and cookies. All of the witch's monster friends show up for a real Halloween party. Finally the witch tells John that they have to leave while it is still night out. When John's pig friends come back cold and tired they are amazed to find all of the treats that John has prepared. When John goes to bed he realizes he is no longer afraid of Halloween and he dreams of all of the new friends he has made. The illustrations in this book are great and the story is really sweet. My daughter loves this book and I really enjoy reading it to her. This book will really put you into a Halloween mood.

My three-year-old son loves this book so much. He keeps asking me to read it over and over again. It's beautifully illustrated and the words are true poetry.

One of our favorite rhyming Halloween books,
This review is from: John Pig's Halloween (Picture Puffin Books) (Paperback)
For several years now, "John Pig's Halloween" has been checked out of our local library (I know, we should just buy a copy!) every fall. My kindergartener used to love listening to me read this aloud to her, and she's now reading it by herself (well, we take turns) and it is just pure delight to hear the rhyming verses roll off our tongues. John Pig is an adorable character that any young child will easily identify with. Feeling nervous about the masks and costumes that inevitably make their appearance on Halloween, John Pig opts for a quiet evening at home.
Before he can make himself comfortable, he gets a visitor in the form of a cute little witch, and when she finds his Halloween treat to be a bit underwhelming, she stays to make some yummy treats that real monsters will enjoy. Soon, the witch's friends drop in, and John Pig finds himself having a most fun Halloween! The rhyming verses and colorful illustrations make this an engaging read-aloud for Halloween. It has certainly become a staple for us every fall, and I need to get a copy for our home library!

This book is a sweet Halloween story, and one that appeals to all ages. The artwork is completely adorable and well-done, and the story of the supposedly timid little pig who stays home from going trick-or-treating with his friends, only to be visited by a witch and several other Halloween monsters who then help him create an evening of fun and making delicious treats at home is bound to be an attractive story to any other reader who has a secret fear! Cute, comforting, and filled with the simple shivers of Halloween!
