5.0 out of 5 stars A must have, May 22, 2001

This review is from: John Healy: Black (Hardcover)
I really like this book. I actually bought it for one image (the cover actually). Unlike [images]... of women, it's very hard to find images of men, black or white that are not homoerotic. There is nothing wrong with homoeroticism (some of the images in this book are and they are wonderfully done) but as a woman sometimes I just want to see a male [image]... without feeling as though I am looking at him through that particular lens. It is VERY nice to see a black men portrayed so beautifully. I recommend this book highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST BOOKS of 2001 !!!, December 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: John Healy: Black (Hardcover)
An exquisite collection of new black & white photographs from renown British photographer John Healy, this is stirring testimony to both the beauty of the black male nude as well as the incredible power of fine art portraiture. Healy has crafted such potent imagery here that one feels completely lifted from the premise that they are viewing a book and instead feel transported to another stratosphere where light and form and mood command total attention of one's consciousness. The technical refinement of each image is obvious but what really sets this work apart is the masterful way that Healy poses his subjects. They grace each page totally and utterly possessing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Photography of Black Men, July 31, 2008

I must admit, I took a risk purchasing this book before seeing it in person at the local book store. I was very pleased to have this cocktail table piece, showcasing the beauty of black men. Every guest I have comments on the drama and pure style of the book. Not to mention my good taste for having it displayed for my guests to peruse while visiting me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great photographs, but where was the meat?, October 17, 2007

I loved these photographs of good taste and great photographic quality and technique. Great book for photographers. Nevertheless I never got what the photographer was trying to convey to its reader, me. No cosmology, no philosophy, no point to get across other than: Here are black beautiful males and their bodies and this is how I photograph them. If this was his point, then he succeeded, other than that it left me wondering what the point of the whole undertaking was for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mmm Mmm Good!!!, August 12, 2005
This review is from: John Healy: Black (Hardcover)
Now this is how you produce and market an art photography book! John Healy grabs your attention 1st w/ the cover of the book that makes you do a double take. That is was what caught my roving eye. In all honesty at the end of the day: YES, "we" more than modestly enjoy a fine-looking specimen. Oh, but John Healy did not stop at just the cover...he went on and on...NO! not monotony, but brilliant works of art. I'd have to say the up close picture of the entire chest and torso is my favorite, and by it being only the torso;I could play w/ my imagination more (I'm still salivating). His book is full of works that are close-up and sooo life-like. I'll tell you that Mr. Healy has "the eye" when picking his handsome models. I could go on...but I gave Mr. Healy's: Black only 4 stars because of the overuse of plastic and I would of LOVED to have seen that "fence corset" shot duplicated on the other page; however, with it taken off showing the imprints left behind. I must say you know how to portray "our" gorgeous Black men. I on the other hand agree w/ the other reviewer, because I am a woman and it was nice to be able to view some of these men w/ out a predisposed motive. More unisexed
