5.0 out of 5 stars MADE FOR CRANKING--UP LOUD, November 3, 2005

This is a fantastic performance by John Hiatt and the Guilty Dogs. John of course is very loose and kinda goofy acting at times, but the music is anything but goofy. This guy is truely passionate about his music and looks like he having a good time performing. One great aspect of this dvd is the superb audio mixing they accomplished. It means that I can crank to radical levels on my volume control, and the sound remains crystal clear, with no distortion. Now thats what I call a treat !!!

When I first saw this back then,I was upset for the fact that I didn't record it and now it's available on dvd,and with bonus songs to boot!! You can tell that John Hiatt is having a good time with his mugging and gestures, but that doesn't matter when the songs and the band are so good!! Who cares if he can't dance! Neither could Peter Wolf or Billy Squier...it's just not the point...I hope Austin City Limits releases more performances on dvd, like the one of K.D.Lang back in the early 80's and a few others.....This is worth getting!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Live Set from a great American songwriter, November 1, 2005
This review is from: John Hiatt - Live From Austin Tx (DVD)
A great set from John Hiatt backed by the always solid Guilty Men..including Elvis's current bass player Davey Faragher...Even though it's from a concert over 10 years ago...still sounds current... A great selection of classic Hiatt songs and the typically great quality video and sound...

5.0 out of 5 stars Pardon me for raving, December 28, 2010

John Hiatt gives a terrific performance from the first note to the last: fiery, funny, and flat-out fun.

Every member of his young band, The Guilty Dogs, matches his energy and virtuosity on guitar, bass, and drums, but the endlessly expressive Hiatt is the unquestioned center of this 1993 show. He's completely switched on, telling hilarious stories, mugging for the audience, whispering, growling, and howling, dancing like a man possessed, playing and singing some of his best songs in a brilliant blend of styles, including folk, country, rock, and funk. You can't take your eyes off him as he rips through 14 great tunes (and the few that weren't hits deserved to be).

Hiatt is well-known for being a songwriter's songwriter, but his delivery puts the seal on the deal. His versions of "Loving a Hurricane," "Your Dad Did," "Memphis In the Meantime," "Something Wild," "Thing Called Love," "Tennessee Plates," "Slow Turning," and "Perfectly Good Guitar" are positively irresistible.

His dedications are as cockeyed as his lyrics: to Marilyn (a high school crush who never gave him the time of day), to Anita Rodgers Court (late daughter of country music founder Jimmy Rodgers), to Bonnie Raitt (for "keeping tires on the old tour bus"), and even to Barry White (a label-mate who told Hiatt, "If you don't go slow, you got no show.") But he plays only two slow numbers, the soulful "Icy Blue Heart" and "Have a Little Faith in Me," both solo, and they're every bit as thrilling as the remaining dozen songs, which are all barn-burners.

Credit is due to the typically terrific Austin City Limits production crew, whose immaculate sound and camerawork give you Hiatt up close and at full volume.

I admit I'm a raving fan, but this 84-minute DVD will make you one even if you're not. You'll want to play it again immediately and wish it were twice as long.

The DVD is awesome. It is classic John Hiatt. You will definitely not be disappointed. I only wish there were some more recent concert footage as he just gets better with age.

I get the chills every damn time I put on Icy Blue Heart. I can SEE the entire song and FEEL the lost disconnect of potential lovers. This is a great one from John.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Night of Songwriting and Storytelling, July 28, 2007

On December 14, 1993 John Hiatt came to Austin City Limits in support of his Perfectly Good Guitar album. With him were the Guilty Dogs: Davey Faragher (bass), Michael Urbano (drums) and Michael Ward (guitars) and for the next ninety minutes the audience was treated to pure Hiatt magic from the sparse Icy Blue Heart and Have A Little Faith In Me to the rocking Slow Turning the show highlighted his catalogue to that point.

This is the entire concert that was edited into the thirty minute television broadcast. Looking back Hiatt comes off a little goofy and the dancing has got to stop but the music is dead on perfect. The disc is worth the price just for the terrific rendition of Buffalo River Home.

I watched with the DTS audio mix and the clarity was very good for an almost 15 year old television show. If the rest of the Austin City Limits videos are this well done this will be a concert DVD series to pay attention to.

If you like Hiatt's music or are just curious this one is well worth the money.

This awesome video is a must for a Hiatt fan like me. With the hot guitar player from Wildflowers (no not Sonny L. this time), these guys rock. Sound and video are great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic John Hiatt, June 7, 2006
This review is from: John Hiatt - Live From Austin Tx (DVD)
I have seen John Hiatt many times in the past and he has always put on a high energy, very animated performance. This disc is no exception and maybe even a little more pumped up than usual. The song selection ranges from slow acoustic ballads to plugged in rock and roll. Hiatt flexes his diverse talents playing several different guitars and keyboards. Make no mistake though that Hiatt's strength is his songwriting and the production quality allows the listener to understand clearly what is being said.
