Another Unheralded Blue Note Saxman, October 4, 2000
This review is from: John Jenkins & Kenny Burrell (Audio CD)
John Jenkins is another in an unfortunately long line of unheralded yet amazing Blue Note saxophone players -- Tina Brooks, Sonny Red, Harold Vick, and to a lesser extent Ike Quebec. This terrific album was originally released domestically as part of the Connoisseur series, but that edition is now out of print, leaving this expensive import as the only version available. "John Jenkins With Kenny Burrell" features, you guessed it, Jenkins on alto sax and Burrell on guitar, with the formidable rhythm trio of Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and longtime Mingus cohort Dannie Richmond on drums, in a rare Blue Note appearance. The disc features three wonderful hard bop originals by Jenkins, "Motif," "Sharon" and "Chalumeau," and one by Burrell, "Blues For Two." The album's remaining two selections are standards, Cole Porter's "From This Moment On" and the beautiful, seldom recorded ballad "Everything I Have Is Yours." John Jenkins might not have many albums as a leader (two on OJC and an excellent Savoy, "John Jenkins And Donald Byrd," which I don't think is available anymore), but they are all outstanding.
