Product Description

At the age of 47 and on the cusp of the breakthrough that is every artist's dream, the comedian John Kawie suffered a devastating stroke which he thought would derail his career... and life. With the sardonic wit that landed him gigs as a writer/contributor for comedians such as Bill Maher, Dennis Miller, and David Brenner, John focused on his experiences with the stroke and created BRAIN FREEZE, a hysterical, poignant, and affirmative journey through the bumpy road to recovery and beyond. Recorded live at the Gotham Comedy Club in New York City in front of a rollicking full house, BRAIN FREEZE is sure to delight those who know just how healthy a laugh can be and to help teach us all that (to quote John) life is indeed at the curb!

Remarkable. Darkly hilarious. . . quite triumphant: it illustrates the strain and the cost of perpetual hope --New York Times

Poignant. . . Kawie opts for gentle humor in this touching true-life tale of perseverance --The New York Daily News, Robert Dominquez

5.0 out of 5 stars Brain Freeze January 23, 2011

John Kawie's "Brain Freeze" is amazingly wonderful. Kawie is intense both as a comic and as a person with something to say. The world is a better place with "Brain Freeze" in it. I could not even imagine what having a massive stroke would be like prior to listening to and laughing with John. Kawie makes it perfectly clear that being the victum of a stroke is not the end of one's life, but rather, it's a new beginning. Anyone who loves comedy should buy this DVD. Anyone who loves drama should buy this DVD. To sum it all up, in "Brain Freeze" Kawie is screaming out that he's alive and well and still hilarious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laughter is the best medicine June 19, 2011

John Kawie's humour provides wonderful insights into the world of the stroke victim and picks up on the theme of Robin Williams movie, Patch Adamas, viz. humour is unmatched when it comes to curative powers. Also carries the message that nothing is impossible.

Strongly recommend this DVD to both victims and care givers.

5.0 out of 5 stars triumphant and touching April 13, 2011

Like a phoenix from the ashes, John Kawie tells of his amazing recovery after a devastating stroke. With intense humor he illustrates the trials of NYC life from hailing a cab the street to the hilarity of a group counseling session. He is truly a hero, an example of a man who overcame. I laughed and cried, enjoyed every moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing show! June 8, 2012
By gbarber
I didn't know what to expect when I purchased "Brain Freeze" but my husband, who had a stroke, and I both love John's humor column. Well, all I can say is what an amazingly clever and poignant show. John's not only an inspiration as a survivor who continues to perform working with his deficits, he gets all the nuances survivors and caregivers experience. He had us laughing - and crying - at what usually makes us furious. We were touched by the humanity and honesty as he shares his story and frustrations about his recovery. This show is so much more fulfilling than just jokes. Thank you John for showing us that just because you've suffered a stroke you need not be a victim. After many viewings we give it 2 thumbs up!

Very disappointing. The material was not funny and was truly offensive. I would not show this DVD to anyone at my hospital. What was the purpose?
