I listened to this material on vinyl for years as it was released in 1972! "Great stuff" from John Kay the frontman from Steppenwolf.I never thought this album would make it to cd. The songs are really great as they vary from blues, country, soft rock, to heavy rock. John wrote a few of the songs and the others are from people who inspired him.
The special bonus is "My Sportin Life" this is a John Kay release that came out in 1973. I never saw this album when it came out but it is really great! John uses some great studio musicians on these songs. Larry Knechtel, Russ Kunkel,Lee Sklar, Danny Kortchmar, and George Biondo plays bass on most of the songs. George was with Steppenwolf on several of their later relaeases.
This is a BGO release so that should tell you something. They have been releasing several great bands over the past few years. The cd is "digitally remastered" from the original tapes and it sounds really nice!
All of you Steppenwolf fans please buy this now!! Crank it up and let that distinct voice of John Kay growl from your speakers. Anyone who loved Steppenwolf or just loves great music will gladly welcome this cd into your collection!!

Who would have thought John Kay could put out something as timeless and classic as these 2 albums. It's on 1 cd, remastered and sounding better then ever. I bought Forgotten Songs for 33 cents in 1976 when W.T.Grants was going out. It was the beginning of the end of so many great American stores. I got My Sportin Life a couple years later. John's voice was made for songs like these. Steppenwolf had broken up and die hard fans couldn't deal with John singing acoustic, folkish songs. They ignored all the rocking songs. Too bad. Should have been huge hits. My mother actually liked it and still listens to it, she's 83. I own almost every Steppenwolf disc. Turned them into 1 best of disc. I listen to this start to finish. Originaly they put out Lone Steppenwolf, 5 songs from each album, very disapointing I burned my own copy with the missing songs with all the cracks and pops only a album can give you. I did a happy dance when this arrived. Best 33 cents I ever spent.

As one reviewer already noted, this is a nice variety of music with some good musicians also. 'Sing with the Children' is the harder rocking song. I tend to like the free wildness of 'Bold Marauder',a fair amount does lean toward country-rock-regardless, there is alot here to enjoy; I must state that another review claims that this ISN'T the John Kay of Speppenwolf-even if you check out his new DVD/CD you'll hear various songs off of these,(and on an old 'Midnight Special' he played 'Movin'On' and 'Moonshine' (Tennessee Wine), in a word-this IS definitely HIM, there is no other John Kay man-Get Real! That is ill-informed and ridiculous. After having these on LP 35 years ago it's GREAT to see this again. To the Wolf!

These two releases wrapped into one represents a side of John Kay which is more country/blues than blues/rock. I had these on LPs when I was younger and hearing these tunes again was a real treat. There`s a lot of good tunes including songs penned by Hank Snow, Robert Johnson, and Donald Fagen/Walter Becker. A few highlights for me are the tunes, I`m Movin' On, Somebody, Easy Evil, and Giles of the River.

This is a review for Forgotten Songs & Unsung Heroes as I haven't heard the other one.

Talk about an underrated masterpiece! John Kay, the lead singer of Steppenwolf, released a country/rock album in 1972 and I'm absolutely floored how wonderful the songwriting is. "Many a Mile" contains the same type of sincere vocal work that Kay illustrated on Steppenwolf classics such as Monster and Seven. It's a beautiful, VERY beautiful voice this man has, and lyrics that are normally honest and more emotional than most. I have a feeling if my dad ever heard this track, he'd break down and cry. I'm surprised he hasn't heard it. Then again, I'm surprised this album isn't considered one of the best albums released in 1972!

"Walk Beside Me" and we'll listen to John Kay all day long, haha. More emotional vocals, but I have to wonder if the rest of the material is anything like the first two songs, because if so... calling it the best album of 1972 isn't a strong enough compliment! I like how Kay uses just enough blues guitar here but doesn't go overboard. Not that I'd complain if he *did* use more blues guitar- it's not like this guy can do anything wrong! Alright maybe I shouldn't go *that* far, haha. This is what happens when you hear fantastic music- you can't think straight!

"You Win Again" is a cover song by Hank Williams, and it's a pretty good, easy listening song overall. This is an example of perfect tracklisting placement. Had this song been track two instead, I wouldn't have been as happy. After devastating me with two heartfelt ballads in a row, I need a breather like this to take me back to earth! "To Be Alive" has a pretty solid verse melody and satisfying lyrics.

I had bought John Kay's first solo LP when it initially came out and really loved that album a lot. This is an excellent CD of his first two solo LP's, and if you're a fan of Steppenwolf or Jon Kay this release is a must have! Glenn Signal Hill, CA
