Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9 Each of these presidential biographies begins with an exciting episode from its subject's life: Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan; Eisenhower's role in D-Day; and Kennedy's famous PT-109 experience. Each president's life is capsulized, with quotes and humorous tidbits included. Important events of the period are included, and both Hargrove and Kent make mention of the many historic events and decisions that were part of each presidency. All three presidents are portrayed positively. With few exceptions, every two-page spread has at least one black-and-white photo; many have more. Photos are of reasonable quality and generally related to the text (one photo in the Truman book is captioned incorrectly, labeling Eisenhower as the outgoing rather than the incoming president). Print is large and clear, contributing to an attractive format. Writing is straightforward for the most part. However, Hargrove's transitions are often awkward and occasionally confusing, especially in the Truman volume. Overall, the content and approachable format make these volumes a welcome addition for libraries serving intermediate and middle-school students. Rosie Peasley, Sylvan Union School District, Modesto, Calif.
