A Priceless Collection of Folk Songs,
By Oliver Owen (Texarkana, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: John Langstaff Sings: Archival Folk Collection, 1949-1961 (Audio CD)
These CD's are among the most treasured in my collection. They contain a wide variety of folks songs and ballads from Great Britain and America, some of them very old, dating back even to Elizabethan times. Some are funny, some are tragic, some are deeply nostalgic and tender. They capture the wide a range of emotions that are common to human beings across the ages, and deal with timeless themes, such as love, loss, separation, reunion, betrayal, fidelity, life and death. Many are filled with a sense of yearning. When I listen to these songs, I feel "connected" to the past-- to the many generations of people who have lived before and have experienced life in all of its joy and beauty and sadness and pain and poignancy. There is something deeply enriching to one's humanity about listening to these songs. Moreover, John Langstaff sings them with a passion and conviction and depth of feeling that is truly praiseworthy. What a beautiful baritone voice he has. Buy this collection and enjoy-- you won't regret it!
