Wonderful, Inspriring, Breathtaking...,
This review is from: John Legend: Get Lifted (Audio CD)
I am one of those who tends to listen to one song 20 times in a row if I am moved by the lyrics, melody, or message. This album was a 20 times in a rower if I ever heard one...the problem was, there were at least 3 songs that I couldn't press the forward button on...just repeat! I had to drive an extra loop on the 101N to keep it going.....
I wish I could give it more than 5 stars...this is the work of a musicial genius.

Jon Legend delivers on his name. He has a voice similar to Stevie Wonder's but still has his own unique style. He has a very complex vocal range and is fun to listen to. With hip hop beats mixed with his unique singing style, you will be both singing and dancing to Jon Legend the all the way through. This album is definately worth buying.

Almost there...,

This album is almost there - with some ingenuity provided by Kanye and some great vocals from John, it has it's shining moments. The album seems to lose steam in the middle. I would recommend the DVD/CD version for just a few dollars more - it's cool, providing some live concert video footage and interviews. It's worth the purchase just to learn more about this prodigy talent. John Legend has the chops and the skills, I think that a little more refining and working with some producers that can help him fine-tune some lyrics and instrumentation could make his next album a 5 star. Glad he's around and looking forward to his next record, just wish he'd ask his "musical guests" to keep the lyrics clean.

John Legend is simply amazing. I have 2 CDs and will be purchasing the new release with a DVD, just because this man is that talented. I saw him earlier this year in Orlando and believe me he is even more amazing live. He's coming to Miami and I will have front row tickets again. John is rare talent. His voice, his aura, and vibe is simply one of a kind. I am waiting on edge for his next release. GO buy this CD NOW...Better yet find out if he is visiting a city near you and get that ticket...you wil not be disappointed.

I came across this CD by accident, and it has been one of my BEST purchases! GREAT R&B-type sound, but a little more edgy. His voice has this indescribeable quality to it - the closest I can come is soul-FULL (to differentiate from the simple "soulful", which doesn't do it justice). You will NOT regret buying this. It's not soft, mushy love songs that sound just like everyone else - the songs are about REAL life, REAL love - just GET IT!

It may be a little late to be just listening to John Legend's album Get Lifted, but like they say, better late than never. And when you hear people that don't even like listening to R&B say that they like this album, that tells you something. It's damn good.
There are plenty of standouts on here, like "Used to Love U" and both versions of the title track. And "It Don't Have to Change" is a nice gospel-flavored track that has him and the Stephens Family reminiscing on how it used to be in the neighborhood. The funky "Stay With You" is also a highlight. John also does well when he lets the music dominate. We all know how great "Ordinary People" is, but another standout is when Miri Ben-Ari lends her strings to "Live It Up". And "So High" is aptly titled because I didn't expect John to be able to do falsetto very well, but he proved me wrong. Sometimes things can get a little corny, though. "Alright" has him steppin' up to the man that he stole his current girl from, and it really makes him seem like a poser. And as much as everyone likes "Number One", I think it's pretty okay, and it starts out with, "Now you can't say I don't love you/Just because I cheat on you." Huh? Kanye's verse doesn't help matters either. Finally, "I Can Change" sounds exactly like "Used to Love U". Still, there are enough good songs on here to make up for those small missteps. So hurry up and check this album out if you haven't already, because Get Lifted will help you do just that. Anthony Rupert

Bought it twice,

Back in December I bought the CD version when it came out because I heard John Legend on a couple of Kanye West's tracks, at first I was mad that the DualDisc version came out way AFTER the regular version and I was hesitant to shell out another 13-14 bucks for it but once I actually heard the new 5.1 version of it I knew it was a good buy. Record companies REALLY need to stop releasing the DualDisc format of albums months after the original, all versions need to be released simultaneously!!!

That dang snooze button. I tell ya. It got me good on this one. I'd been hearing from everybody about John Legend for so long but just never picked up his CD. I knew he could play ("Ordinary People"). I knew he could blow ("Ordinary People"). After seeing phenomenal television performances over the past few months (his duet with Stevie Wonder on, you guessed it, "Ordinary People"), I finally decided to "Get Lifted" and can't stop rocking this joint. Of course "Ordinary People" is a masterpiece, simply stated. A man, his piano and the truth about relationships.
This debut has a smooth flow to it with funky rythym and bass grooves a la Kanye West for most of the album. "Get Lifted" is one such track with great melody, harmony, a slick guitar riff that adds a taste of reggae and head-bobbing beat. Definitely one for the repeat button. "Used to Love U" is another straight up jam with its in your face message of missing that well when its run dry. The messages stream from infidelity with "She Don't Have to Know", to ending his player ways on "I Can Change", and taking it home as family members add vocals on "Don't Have to Change" in the end. With a voice that brings raw soul, passion, and urgency to the listener's ear, John Legend seems to be channeling the old school masters like Marvin, Stevie and Donny. Yet, this old soul carries a new sound and style all his own. If he continues on this path, Legend will leave a legacy that is truly masterful. I gave 4 out of 5 for the simple fact that I wanted LONGER songs and MORE songs. This is the kind of music you just dont want to end. Peace*blessings. CLB. |
