I remember exactly how I heard of John Lennon's passing: I was working as a copy editor on a Midwestern newspaper, and had to gather all the hard copy that was spit out of the AP machines overnight. When I reached the reports of his shooting, I felt faint. When I read of his death, I cried.
This wonderful book brings back such bittersweet thoughts of his great talent, gone too soon. It is packed with amazing memorabilia and photos I've never seen (check out the great work of photographer Ian Wright).
A big thumbs-up to author John Borack for a sensitive and insightful book. And just think: The day after tomorrow would have been Lennon's 70th birthday.
For all who loved him, this is a wonderful tribute.

John Borack's "John Lennon: Life Is What Happens" is a wonderful chronicle of John's life that will serve as a perfect addition to your Beatles/Lennon bookshelf or coffee table. Beautifully designed and bursting with an array of captivating visuals, rare memorabilia and incisive text, the book also features insightful commentary from luminaries of music and TV who offer their view on what made John such a special artist. Highly recommended.

On John's 70th birthday I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate his life than by perusing this book. It's full of great photographs of John (many I've never seen before), and interesting photos of various Beatles and Lennon memorabilia (art, letters, etc.) The author appreciates the depth and complexity of Lennon as a man and as a poet and musician. The book will conjure memories for readers of a certain age, as they'll recall the times of their lives when reading about Lennon's. A wonderful addition to any Beatles or Lennon fan's collection. It's like perusing a photo album of an old friend lost long ago but held dear forever.

Hi, Actually this is a very nice, VERY handsome, BEAUTIFULY designed book, but ends up being really a survey of collectable Beatles items (includes recent prices, and sale dates, etc.!!! Wow!) and is not really a 'John' book after all. He is there of course, and maybe a few more of his pictures than of the others; but really this is a 'Beatles' book, more than a 'John' book. And I think the author shares the generally 'too positive' feelings about John and his later life, and does not seem to be aware enough of the damage that John suffered as a child, his poor decision making abilities (with no parnetal guidence) and the tole that his extreme over-use (MIS-USE!!!) of LSD had on his mind, and subsequent actions. As the book relies too much on 'Beatles items,' the happier, more sane and exciting period of his life (with Cynthia and young Julian) is too casaully passed over, in favor of the earlier and final, very crazy years of his life. Only two photos with Cynthia, only one with Julian, and WAY too many with Y.O. And the chronology of the book is VERY jumbled up!!! Things are all out of order. I just opened the book randomly and jotted down the dates from 9 photos in a row over 4 pages: 1968, '94, '84, '68, '69, '68, '67, and '64. I get dizzy when I page through! And no text really. The 'text' is just odd bits here and there amidst the photos, and rather scattered, and has no real flow or focus, and intersperced with odd quotes for all sorts of people; often John, or another Beatle, but often poeple who I have no idea who they are (though they are mentioned in short below each quote). And the text, when it does show up, is not so well written. Again, a random sample; '...released their next new music' that just does not sound right to me?Read more ›

An outstanding oversized book celebrating everything that made John Lennon special and an enduring icon, this is a book that you'll want to skim through first, looking at the pictures and reading the captions that immediately catch your eye. Then, you'll want to sit down for a more in-depth reading of Lennon's life story.

The rare photos, especially of the collectibles, are well presented and show the wide variety of recordings and merchandise from Lennon's Beatles days to his solo career and beyond.

The background stories are well researched, showing both sides of the story.

Whether you're a die-hard Beatles fan or a more casual one, this is a book you need in your collection.

This is gorgeous, touching tribute to the life of John Lennon. From start to finish I was moved by this beautiful book. The combination of memorabilia -- everything from Beatlemania items to Lennon's original drawings -- and photographs of Lennon from boyhood to manhood is stunning, telling a powerfully visual story. There are hundreds and hundreds of photos that make the book a joy. Author John Borack tells an elegant, simple story of Lennon's life, never getting in the way of his subject. A beautiful book about a beautiful life.
