More About the Author

Philip W. Comfort, Ph.D., has studied English literature, Greek, and New Testament at the Ohio State University and the University of South Africa. He has taught these classes at a number of colleges, including Wheaton College, Trinity Episcopal Seminary, Columbia International University, and Coastal Carolina University. He is currently senior editor of Bible reference at Tyndale and served as New Testament editor for the New Living Translation. He has contributed a number of books to the Tyndale collection, both as author and editor. Among these are "The New Greek-English Interlinear New Testament," "The Origin of the Bible," "The Tyndale Bible Dictionary," "Essential Guide to Bible Versions," "The Text of the Earliest New Testament Greek Manuscripts" (with D. Barrett), and "Who's Who in Christian History"--all of which are currently available at Tyndale. Philip lives in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, with his wife, Georgia. His three children (Jeremy, John, and Peter) live nearby, as do his grandchildren. He enjoys the ocean, soccer, and writing poetry.

This is an excellent bible study. It has everything you need. It has the notes and maps and profile guides of the people in the Bible. It's very nice to be able to look at the maps and recognize where the events happened. I felt it was a very good way to learn more about your Bible.

This small booklet is an excellent size for carrying in a purse or bible bag. Plus the fact that the New Living Translation Bible chapters for 1-3John are included at the beginning of the booklet means that you don't need to carry around a bible as well. However, I found that it was totally unnecessary for the publisher to include the complete preamble to the bible version and the printing was so small it was very difficult to read, especially the notes. The 13 lessons were each divided into sections with questions pertaining upon Reflecting on your life, Reading the passage, Realizing the principle, Responding to the message and Resolving to take action on the principle as well as two more advanced questions at the end. Although the intent was great, I found the questions very basic and rather repetitive. This would be a great beginners' study but not for someone more familiar with bible studies.

Tyndale House Publishers sent me a copy of this study to review. There was no requirement as to the nature of my review.

It's a little hard to review since it's not an actual book...but it does look like it could come in very handy. I'll be honest, I did not read through the entire thing, but I think a cursory skim gets the job done.

The benefits:

It's small. This mean's it is super easy to carry around. If you wish to study one book of the Bible, these little guys are the way to go.

It includes the full text of the Scriptures, plus WAY more background and notes than you get in your average study Bible.

It also includes 12 unique Bible study layouts for you to use in a small group setting (or personal use, should that be your cup of tea).

Again, this book (booklet, really) is only 70 pages and super thin. Sure beats the heck out of carrying around a massive study Bible with you everywhere you go. I will most definitely consider purchasing this type of item if and when I am ever needing some extra research on one book of the Bible. Way to go Tyndale!
