Great (as long as you buy it before you get the horse),

This review is from: John Lyons' Bringing Up Baby: 20 Progressive Ground-Work Lessons to Develop Your Young Horse into a Reliable, Accepting Partner (Paperback)
I bought this with my yearling in mind. Sad to say alot ofit is of no help to me anymore seeing as how he already knows how to lead , tie, bath and trailer. However, I wish I had it before I got him. I love the way the book is divided into weanling and yearling Chapters. Also, the book is thin and concise, which is really what you need when you want to just get a quick problem solver when you're at the barn. The progression on the lessons is perfect and also helps to check and make sure you're moving along fast enough. Even though my baby already completed alot of these life lessons I looked at the techniques anyway and found them to be very agreeable. None of them included anything rough or mean. This is not the typical horse breaking.

John Lyons IS the best horse in the paddock!,

As a professional horse trainer who lives her craft, I give John Lyons a TON of credit for making me the horsewoman I am today. John is known as America's Most Trusted Horseman and I'll take it a step further and call him the guy who writes THE how-to books on training. John's not a bells and whistles kind of guy, just one heck of a great trainer. If you purchase only one book on horse training, I suggest this reasonably priced book that beautiflly illustrates how John builds a foundation of trust and respect. If you are able to apply the basic principles illustrated, you will be able to improve any horse, regardless of age or experience - and I mean that for both you and your horse. The book features 20 progressive ground-work lessons to develop your horse into a reliable, accepting partner. I Give It 4 Hooves Up!

Although I've raised some foals before, I found this book very useful. The progressive lessons are great and it's very handy to be sure that you aren't leaving out anything in your foal's training. Kind methods and well organized, a great book.

I have this book and have used some of the things in it. It's not really what I need for my horse. She's two, really hyper, green and distracted. The instruction in the book is great. I just needed more of a detailed...do this, this might happen, fix it like this...book. I'm new at this. She's the first horse I've tried to train. I've been around horses for most of my life but training is alot different I'm learning. I have a new baby horse on the way though and I know this will be an invaluable resource for training her(or him). Along with Dr. Miller's Imprint Training. I would recommend this book. But I have really found alot of help in Clinton Anderson's new book. With all these books combined my horse and I are doing good and I know we'll both learn alot. It's a good book and valuable addition to anyone's library.

I bought this book for my daughter. She lost her older hunter horse and decided she didnt want another made horse. She could never replace him so she wanted a foal and to raise it herself. Well Bella is only 7 months old and a handful but by using this and one other book she has already taught her to lead. Just a few minutes for a couple of days and using these techniques she has had small successes. this is one of the better books that I could find for it was easy to understand the directions and pictures. It is one of the better books to purchase if you plan on raising a baby too.

This is a great book for those who need to teach a baby, an ex-racer, or any horse the essential basics. Each lesson begins with a description of that you're going to do and why. There's also a list of needed equipment (all of these lessons are to take place in a round pen or arena with the corners "rounded" off). Step-by-step, Lyons takes you through the lesson, providing a picture with each step and a description of what you are doing. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to teach any horse basic ground manners.

John Lyons: Bring up baby,
This review is from: John Lyons' Bringing Up Baby: 20 Progressive Ground-Work Lessons to Develop Your Young Horse into a Reliable, Accepting Partner (Paperback)
It's a good book and I like all of John Lyons' material. I bought it before my colt was born and while I like the excercises, they seem for more like a one or two year old or a foal that's never been handled or imprint trained. Alot of his stuff uses the round pen to work and that's fine, but you can't really lunge them till they're two and while you can do what he does in here younger, because it's very light, you don't want to over do it and mess up their limbs or back. Like I said, it's a good book, but more for older foals who have never been handled or imprint trained and are possibly weaned already. I would go with Robert Millars Imprint Training if you are wanting to get a good foundation from the start and this book if you are getting your foal as a weanling. It's excellent for what it is, but I see it being used in limited circumstances.

I find John Lyon's Bringing up Baby very informative! The pictures do a great job illustrating each lesson. I just purchased a filly, and I want to give her the best life possible. I think by following John's techinques you can't go wrong. His videos are great too!
Sometimes we forget to use common sense when working with horses, and if you pay attention to them and learn to properly communicate, you will find a great new enjoyment with your horses! |
