This review is from: John Madden Football (Sega Genesis) (Video Game)
This is one of the most important games ever released on the Sega Genesis. While technically it's not the first Madden(its the second, the original was released two years earlier for the apple II pc) it is the first one developed and released for home consoles. The game was developed by Park Place Productions who did a fantastic job with the original Genesis trilogy(John Madden Football, Madden 92, and 93) which had a distinct arcade style and feel to the gameplay and controlls that was sadly never duplicated or surpassed on the Genesis with subsequent releases(William Robinson and High Score Ent. took over development with Madden 94 on through 96). Park Place did excellent work on the graphics in thier Genesis Madden games, as each has solid scaling effects, vibrant colors, precise collision detection, smooth animation, and absolutely no sprite flickering or slowdown(all problems that either individually or collectively plagued all post Park Place Genesis Maddens). Even though the game plays and feels like an arcade game(I actually prefer to play it with an arcade stick) and is quick and easy to play(often cited for teaching many newcomers the rules and basic strategies of the american sport), The players move a little too slow, the ball hangs in the air too long, none of the players have any numbers or names of any kind, There is no season mode, the team colors are a little bit off, and there are only 16 teams.
The series advanced pretty far very quickly, in fact this games sequel(92) pretty much makes it obsolete as it addresses every problem that I mentioned above(except for the season) not to mention the bells, whistles, and features added in later installments like stat tracking, player names, and a full season with playoffs.
This game is far better on the Genesis than the snes. The snes version was released almost a year later and had the missing teams, co op multiplayer gameplay, weather effects and a few other minor things(which were included in the Genesis exclusive Madden 92) that were missing from the Genesis version. However the snes versions frame rate is literally half of that used in the Genesis version leading to some unplayably bad, choppy gameplay.
The best version of this game however was released in 92 for the amiga pc.

This game is amazing, the graphic detail is incredible. I couldn't believe when I first started playing. It was like being sucked into a whole new dimension, filled with blurry 2-D men running around a green blurry field. And the most amazing part was this invisble fat guy who kept yelling incoherent, irrelevent, and incomprehensible phrases at me from in my tv. It's hard to believe that they could fit a whole fat guy in one small, easy to carry game cartridge, but those geniuses at EA did it, weren't ready for that, were ya Sony? Note To Self: Could invisble fat guy be the Madden spoken of on the cover, remember to ask Santa or possibly other non-denominational holiday figure, Merry
Non-Denominational Holiday Season everyone.
