Format: Hardcover
John Marin: Modernism at Midcentury by Debra Bricker Balken is this year's outstanding art periodical. Elegant in written style in terms of research, beautiful in layout with large colored plates of Marin works, this catalogue brings into your home and library major Marin works now showing at the Portland Museum of Art in Portland , Maine. A full page black and white photograph of John Marin standing in a coat holding a hat, taken by Irving Penn circa 1949, greets the reader of this catalogue, next to the Forward page, and sets a serious tone in both the book and exhibit. This powerful photograph hangs in the center of the PMA exhibit and gives a sense of Marin's personal presence at the exhibit, which opened June 23 and runs through October 9. The heavy quality of paper in the catalogue showcases the beautiful colored reproductions of works in it with great accuracy. White space around works gives them space to breathe. The text flows with grace and ease , with detailed footnotes on sides of pages and a wonderful bibliography in the back of the book as well as extensive check list of works in the exhibit. Also a list of lenders to the exhibit at the front of the book includes 40 major museums and collectors across the nation, an impressive element in the exhibit as well as the catalogue. This catalogue is a collector's item for those who love, Joh Marin, modern art, and visual beauty. Most of all this catalogue reaffirms Marin's importance in American art and preserves an aesthetic and scholarly record of this important exhibit. I recommend highly this catalogue without hesitation. sincerely, Pat Davidson Reef writer on the arts, Maine

I would certainly agree with the first reviewer's assessment. This is really a lovely book. The quality of Ms. Balken's text, the overall production values and especially, I think, the comparatively large number of oil paintings, not just watercolors, --all beautifully reproduced-- make it an endless pleasure. I got my copy a year and a half or so ago and find that I still pick it up and look around in it with some frequency. There's something always fresh in the work. Marin was one of the exceptional ones and this book does him justice.

Didn't care for his art at all. Mostly just a bunch of painted scratches. Contemporary Arthur Dove was a much better painter, and did some lovely pastels.
