Book Description

John Masefield wrote four books on The Great War: Gallipoli, The Old Front Line, War and the Future and Battle of the Somme. These have been acclaimed as perceptive and beautiful crafted works, which bring home the full horror and hopelessness of war. This is the first opportunity for historians and general readers to purchase all four in a handsome yet reasonably priced volume, which is definitely a collectable.

In addition there is a full introduction by Dr. Philip Errington, the leading Masefield authority who is head of Sotheby's Department of Printed Books and Manuscripts. This rare collection is rounded off by a selection of shorter pieces by the hugely popular Poet Laureate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much more than a Poet Laureate September 21, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I like many youngsters in the UK had to learn and recite "cargoes" at my UK Primary school. I still remember it. This book introduced me to more of his writings and has a concise bioraphy also. An interesting read, especially to gain an appreciation of history from the era. There are texts here ranging from 1914 thru to 1939, on the battles and preparations for the Somme, Gallipoli, and post Great War (aka World War 1) era Britain. Eloquent and memorable, read all or part of it.
