Love of the World: Essays is a collection of prose pieces by John McGahern written during the period 1968-2005. The final piece in the collection is a review of Liam Kelly's book of photographs of Kiltrubrid, Co. Leitrim, in the 1890s in which McGahern writes that he 'finds local histories as fascinating as some of the great 'histories of state' (p.426). By pointing to their ordinariness, the lives documented by Kelly surpass the 'Importances' of History, says McGahern.
