4.0 out of 5 stars valuable for intermediate+ players
Patitucci is an excellent teacher, but not entirely comfortable in front of camera. He covers most of the basics: posture, left and right hand action, strength/flexibility/independence exercises: spiderwalking, pulloffs with other fingers locked. The harmony/theory sections assume you have a decent command of the basics.

This is not what you're thinking. This DVD is merely two hours of the "flamboyant" John Patitucci playing songs. He does not show any of his riffs to you, he plays them at full speed so it takes forever to find the pattern. This is $30.00 I'll never have back!

This review is from: John Pattitucci: Complete Electric Bass, Vol. 1 and 2 (DVD)

The bonus footage of him and Steve Bailey, and of Jaco (clips from other Alfred DVDs, i think) are fun to watch.

Some drawbacks of DVD version:

- a lot (50%) of footage uses 6-string, which is still relatively uncommon, and forces you to figure your own fingerings/transposes if you don't have one.

- much of the footage after the initial clinic chapters, JP playing with recorded backup or with Drummer D Weckl live, is not close up, so not that helpful. YOu can listen, you can't watch JP's hand action carefully.

- sound is printed through on original analog master tapes, i.e. you can hear a faded "preview" of Patittucci talking before he starts talking. Not a big deal.
