Book Description

March 2, 2004
A quarter of a century ago, the Catholic Church surprised the world by electing its first Polish pope, 58-year-old Karol Wojtyla, known as John Paul II. The pontiff's charisma has made him a beloved figure even as he has struggled to represent and unite the disparate factions of the modern Catholic community. Published in cooperation with "Der Stern, Germany's widest-selling weekly magazine, this timely book portrays the pope's complex personality and politics through texts by five internationally renowned authors, accompanied by a series of stunning photographs that survey his life and work.
John Paul II's leadership has inspired both enormous respect and constant debate. His portrait as a generally modern pope, who travels widely and makes use of the latest in communication media to explore existential questions of our time, stands in contrast to his conservative views on such issues as abortion, birth control, and the ordination of women. A glorious celebration of the 25 years of his papacy, th book provides a balanced perspective on the achievements of the man considered the most popular pope in modern times.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This unusual book combines two unlikely genres-the topical scholarly anthology and the glossy photography book-into a successful and oddly erudite coffee table opus about the life and contributions of Pope John Paul II. Five authors present essays in their areas of specialization: Fischer offers an entertaining biographical study of the man born as Karol Wojtyla; Stehle examines the pope's legacy of anti-Communism and savvy understanding of international diplomacy; Hertzberg analyzes his relationships with Jews, especially during the crucial World War II years; Accattoli lauds his soul-searching humility in issuing more than 100 "mea culpa" statements throughout his papacy; and Politi explores his efforts to preserve the Church's exalted position in a rapidly changing Europe. The book is enhanced by 139 photographs, 111 of them in color and many of them large two-page spreads. We see grand, vivid scenes of papal visits to India and Cuba and mass celebrations in St. Peter's Square. These imposing images exist side-by-side with more intimate portraits of the pontiff at worship: kneeling at the grotto in Lourdes, France, for example, or paying his respects at a memorial in Auschwitz. The opening pages include historic photos of the pope as a boy and seminarian, while the final pages offer images from the 2003 jubilee celebration.

From Booklist

This stunning pictorial essay features approximately 250^B photographs celebrating the life and times of Pope John Paul II. Although the bulk of the text and the photos are devoted to John Paul's extraordinary 25-year tenure as head of the Roman Catholic Church,^B attention is also paid to his formative years in Poland and his rise through the ranks of the priesthood. The five essays accompanying the sumptuous illustrations appropriately flesh out the charismatic pontiff. Topics addressed include John Paul's views on Communism, anti-Semitism, forgiveness, and the future of the Church in modern Europe. This visually striking overview of the experiences of an internationally admired religious leader is perfect for general collections. Margaret Flanagan

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor all the way around, May 26, 2006
This review is from: John Paul II: A Pope for the People (Hardcover)
John Paul II was one of the most charismatic popes in history. He certainly was the most photogenic so it's a shame this book has such poor photographs and pedesterian writing. Save your money and buy any other picutre book put together on the life of this great pope but pass this one by. It's a really poor effort.
