This review is from: John Philip Sousa: On Stage (Audio CD)
I have all four of Keith Brion's recordings of Herbert and Sousa with the Razumovsky Symphony and they are a total delight. The playing is spiffy and spirited, and the sound engineering is quite impressive. As for the items on this CD, you may be surprised to find that Sousa writes delightful waltzes. The ballet, People Who Live in Glass Houses, is a splendid set of character pieces, with a great deal of wit. The Overture to Our Flirtations, premiered when Sousa was 26, is a fully fleshed out orchestral piece that deserves revival by our symphony orchestras. If all this rare Sousa sends you swimming, there is always the El Capitain March to help you find your bearings. It's done to a fare-thee-well, but so is everything on this spendid collection.
