Oh, the presentation is nice. The cover is nice and sturdy, and it's cool to see that Bjork drawing on the back (and the full advertisement with Bjork within.) The pages inside are nice, too.
But, what's disappointing about is that the description is very misleading!
I've read the original Spumco COMIC BOOK comics before, and this book only collects a handful of these.
The ones collected are good, and fun to look at, however I could have lived without having the "previously unpublished story", and had another originally published story instead. I really was hoping to see the story about Jimmy babysitting. :(
I don't know much about the history of this project, what affected the decisions or whether some material might not have been available, but this just feels a rather lacking. There's not even an introduction. I'd of liked to have at least seen a paragraph by John K or Jim Smith. At least this rather makes up for that John K art book project having been dropped (something I hope still happens someday.)
However, I'd say, if you're a fan of John K and his work, it's still worth checking out. It is archival quality, so it may serve as a good replacement to the first couple issues of COMIC BOOK if you own the originals from the 90's. But, don't expect to own the whole kitten kaboodle in hardback form.
Hopefully we'll see additional volumes.
Only the first Marvel issue is nearly collected except it's missing the black and white comic that starts the issue. The complete George Liquor fishing issue that spans two of the Dark Horse issues are missing. Not even one of the original comics was completely collected. I would have returned this instantly if it weren't for the original strip.
Now I realize no where does this say that the collection is complete, but they can't just throw in all the covers for the original comics and then get all of the issues out of order. Anyone who does not know the original would assume it's complete because of that. They could have easily given the extra page count for the overpriced amount of this book and collected everything. It's otherwise sort of a rip off, they might as well have just released a new black and white issue with the new strip instead.
I'll change my review of this if Yoe is willing to release a Vol. 2, but otherwise, I can't recommend this to anyone, new and old fans alike. And if there is a Volume 2, it had better collect the remaining material. There's also a few unused strips that went up on John K's blog years ago that would be worth throwing in.
It only contains 2 of 4 issues, for the size and price all 4 could have been published.
Worst of all, i sold all the original comics before purchasing this, thinking it'd be an upgrade.
Other than that, there's a lot of cool stuff in this book--if you're a John K fan or just a cartoon fan, it gets two thumbs up from me! Highly recommended!
