Book Description

August 15, 1997
The book is sprinkled with garden plans, recipes (for an Egyptian condiment called Dukkah and a geranium-leaf sorbet), and ideas for achieving what the designer calls humble elegance. Or, better yet, pastoral panache.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

These profusely illustrated books explore the design styles of two internationally renowned British interior designers. Hoppen shows her personal design style of taking North African and Asian designs and items and incorporating them into contemporary interiors. The layout of the photographs provides a nice juxtaposition of images, such as a green rice paddy or an Algerian wrought iron gate with an interpretation of how that color, shape, or texture is used in residential decor. Stefanidis allows us to visit his home, which he created from cow sheds in Dorset, England. The book proceeds room by room and through the gardens, with the chatty text explaining his approach to interior design and landscaping; it even includes recipes to make the reader feel a welcome guest. Both books are recommended for interior design collections.

Not your ordinary coffee-table book; an essential guide for anyone interested in a house and garden that is original, witty, mindful of place and time. The photographs are unusually good and the text compelling --- it makes the good life seem accessible and comfortable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Living by Design - an Apt Title, April 26, 2002

(REAL NAME)
John Stefanidis does live by design; and with purpose and clarity he also designed his home and gardens, with wonderful results. He used his own textile designs to good use throughout the home, which is indicative of a man who knows his own mind when it comes to design. The results of the transformation of old stables into a comfortable home are spectacularly simple, by design, making the home a most usable, gracious, and gentle environment for him. There are also numerous design elements which any would be designer/decorator could use to good advantage in their own homes.
