Editorial Reviews

An exciting collection of never-before-released original production shorts featuring the legendary John Wayne. Go behind the scenes with Duke and view rare footage from "McLintock!", "In Harm's Way", "The War Wagon", "El Dorado", "McQ", "Brannigan", "The Cowboys", and others. A fascinating look at how these classic Wayne movies were made. See Wayne interacting with his co-stars and directors while on location. Bonus: original t.v. commercials and public service announcements featuring John Wayne. These films have not been seen in decades.

This video features John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, Otto Preminger, Richard Attenborough, Maureen O'Hara, James Stewart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, rare original production shorts featuring Wayne, December 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: John Wayne : Behind the Scenes With the Duke [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Extremely rare production shorts originally used to promote Wayne's films on their initial release. Included: fascinating, behind the scenes featurettes on "McLintock", "In Harm's Way", "War Wagon", "El Dorado", many others. Also enjoyable: rare commercials and charity appeals featuring the Duke. Best of all, an independent label video recorded in SP mode for best quality.

I am a John Wayne fan. I loved seeing his films as a kid when they first came out, and I consider them now to be a valuable legacy from a great actor and a wonderful man. This superbly researched and balanced portrait shows the Duke in all his humanity and complexity, as well as providing an overview of a one-of-a-kind career. I'm sorry that moviegoers today can't enjoy the experience of going into a theatre and seeing a John Wayne film on the big screen for the first time. It was nothing short of the greatest, and so was he, as a man, as an actor, and as an American who was never ashamed to speak his mind. An underrated actor whose longevity with fans is finally getting journalists to see how great a talent he was (and is), Wayne may be more popular today than ever before, thanks to video, DVD, and biographies like these. Simple justice, pilgrim!
