With a title containing the name, John Wayne, you would hope to have something much better. Basically the book is a childs guide to the Wild West with some misinformation in the details. There are a few feeble references to the period some John Wayne pictures took place but no actual research done into the films. As far as photos, there are some good shots of period firearms(none of John Wayne's) and the rest of the photos of cowboy gear are not even from the period. The author talks about period saddles from the 1800s and shows photos of rodeo saddles from the 1950s. This book would be very misleading to a wannabe historian. To those that know the difference, it's just very annoying. Would be nice someday to have a book that looks into "John Wayne's Wild West", but this one is not it and very lacking in general. To have a full color glossy book done about John Wayne, one should first get the rights to more that 2 or 3 photos. Very disappointing...

As a long-time John Wayne fan and a lover of the Wild West, I was fired up when I saw JOHN WAYNE'S WILD WEST listed at Amazon. Since it combined two of my favorite interests, I thought Bruce Wexler's book would just what the doctor ordered. I asked for - and received - JOHN WAYNE'S WILD WEST as a Christmas gift. Having read it, I'm kinda sorry I asked for it.

To be blunt, I think JOHN WAYNE'S WILD WEST is a case of false advertising. The book runs to 192 pages. If you combined the material on John Wayne all together, it might(!) amount to 20 pages or 10% of the book. The Wayne material is mostly pretty superficial references to various movies that loosely tie in with the subject of that particular chapter (guns of the old West, towns, cattle drives, etc.). There's no broad coverage of the Duke's western flicks nor of his personal interest in the history of the Wild West. And several photographs showing Wayne in various roles/films are incorrectly labeled. Wexler seems to have a very basic knowledge of Wayne's career.

Having said that, the material on the Wild West was interesting and informative. I enjoyed the illustrations, especially the color photographs of Western guns, garb, gear and grub. The book could have used an index though.

Short and no-so-sweet: lots of anticipation; big disappointment. Though his name is plastered in the title, Wayne is a bit player in this book. The Duke deserved better.

The title is a bit misleading, as a good portion of this book focuses not specifically on JW, but more on the clothes, firearms, etc. of the mid to late 1800's. It does give some insight into many of the guns and props for the Dukes films, such as "True Grit", "The Shootist" etc. However, I would say that this is more of a book that will hold the interest of western history buffs and gun enthusiasts.

Although I would prefer more of a unique insight into the guns, tack, clothing, horses, etc. of John Wayne, and the accuracy of the pieces that were used. Nonetheless this is a good book for my collection.
