Book Description

April 2, 2001
Accompanying a retrospective at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in New York, this new monograph documents the work of painter John Wesley, covering his entire career from 1961 until today. Wesley is known for his consistency of palette--baby blues and cotton pinks--his use of painted "frames" within his pictures, his early emblem paintings, his cartoon Bumstead works--and ultimately for his representations of an inner erotic voyage where the viewer is both voyager and voyeur. Initially considered in alignment with pop artists of the early 60s, Wesley consistently produced works of such a subtle and subversive nature as to put him in a category of his own. He used the early tools of advertising production--like tracing paper and stock photography--and was the subject of a wide range of influences, from Surrealism to Art Nouveau, from ancient Greek poetry to Matisse. The result is an oeuvre that has challenged and rewarded viewers for forty years.

This review is from: John Wesley: Paintings: 1961-2000 (Hardcover)
Alanna Heiss, director of P.S.1 and deputy director of the MOMA, gives us an unprecedented overview of the work of Wesley, an artist originally considered a Pop Art painter who has continued to work in a highly recognizable, consistent style over his career. With high quality, large scale color images of all of his pieces in the 2000 P.S.1 show and many more black and white photos of additional works, the artist, and prior exhibits, this text gives anyone interested in Wesley an excellent overview of his output through its various phases.

Donald Judd was an early admirer of Wesley's work and some of his finest early pieces are owned by the Judd foundation. Historical reviews by Judd, Hannah Green, Peter Plagens, Ken Johnson and others are included along with an eleven page interview of Wesley by Heiss.

Taken together with the January 2007 show of his Dagwood and Blondie series at Fredericks & Freiser gallery, one can see Wesley's themes through their current fruition. It has been interesting to see the artist's return from relative obscurity prior to the P.S.1 show to renewed attention today as evidenced by his history at auction.
If any of his work appeals to you, this book is an excellent, relatively inexpensive way to learn a great deal more about the artist.
