Book Description

August 1997 1851492704 978-1851492701
Plucked from oblivion, Godward serves as the last best example of 19th century Greco-Roman Classicism. Of a reclusive nature and painting in a style completely out-of-date with post-war Europe, this genius was and remained obscure. Godward's brilliance, with the recent revival of interest in his fallow Classicists, Alma-Tadema and Lord Leighton, is only now coming to light. Godward's art sought to portray peace, feminine beauty and ideal perfection in an age careening headlong into atrocity. He did so by marvelously painted and composed pictures of beautiful women in halycon classical environments. He was a niche painter whose subject, while arresting, was narrow. However, only Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was better at painting this genre of 'patrician women on marble benches'. Melancholia, fed by ill health and increasing artistic criticism overwhelmed his fantasy world of serenity and he died by his own hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL book!, April 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: John William Godward: The Eclipse of Classicism (Hardcover)
Lots of hard research provides a little information on this painter. Most of the information centers around the paintings, and sketches themselves , as well of the criticism of his art. This book contains 160 + beautiful , high quality images . (including one of J.W. Godward as a child..) I usually lean towards Pre-Raphaelite art, but found this artist to be a refreshing and bright alternate interest . I think the book is well worth the price!

4.0 out of 5 stars The ravishing art is worth the price, May 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: John William Godward: The Eclipse of Classicism (Hardcover)
The text of this book manages to be both dull and embarrassingly amateurish. But the paintings? They are spectacular. The book is worth owning even at this price simply for the art. It's high time Godward was recognized and appreciated, and this book will no doubt contribute much to his wider appeal.

This review is from: John William Godward: The Eclipse of Classicism (Hardcover)
What a remarkable book this is. A comprehensive book about one of the greatest masters of 19th century-John William Godward.

The book contains a great collection of his works as high quality pictures as well as a comprehensive biography from his grandfather to the life of his family after his death in details. The book is well published and written.

Your library misses it.
