An Englishman born in Rome to artist parents, John William Waterhouse (1849–1917) was deeply influenced by his early life in Italy. The paintings of the mature artist show an Italian attention to bodily masses; his trees suggest Botticelli; even in paintings inspired by English verse, his settings suggest fifteenth-century Siena rather than Victorian London. Among the twelve gorgeous works in this calendar are The Lady of Shalott, Psyche Entering Cupid‘s Garden, The Soul of the Rose, Juliet,
and The Danaïdes.
