The book only occasionally pops up on Amazon. I was lucky enough to pick it up
I read it all night. Some of the songs have meaning now. Thanks Johnette for sharing your heart. xx
When I bought this book I wasn't sure what to expect and unsure if parting with $25 was a good idea. I was glad I made the purchased it and really enjoyed reading it. From a production standpoint it's very well done. It's not just text on blank pages, but is filled with graphic, artwork, and creative use of fonts. It is on the short side, about 80 pages. However, it's intended to be a glimpse into someone's life, not an autobiography. I was satisfied with the length and given the quality of the book, and the fact that it's autographed, feel that it was a good value.
Thanks Johnette, . . . looking forward to Volume II, if there is one.

The album was the self-titled, "Concrete Blonde." POW - it was what rock and roll was meant to be, complete with the absolute baddest female vocalist/bassist (Johnette Napolitano) who has a voice that cuts through your soul and lyrics to match. The artwork on the inside sleeve (which I promptly hung on my bedroom wall) had all the lyrics written/drawn by hand and sketches of a world and a sentiment that I could relate to. CB became my favorite band forever. "Rough Mix" resembles that album sleeve that hung on my wall as a teen.
It is what art should be. It evokes every emotion possible. It includes drawings and photos and prose and poetry. Aptly put on the inside cover, it is "lyrics and writings & dreams in scratchy black and white as remembered through my gray." Maybe you've met some of the characters in this book. You've probably cried some of the tears and had the same fears. I especially love the stories behind the songs which make an awesome song lyric even more poignant. Johnette's works stand the test of time. Can you tell I like this book? Thank you Johnette, for always staying true.
Otherwise I found the book to be an easy read, a very interesting story which is artfully told. The story is a rough mix jumping to lyrics and then back to the narrative of a sometimes troubled but colorful life. Although there are not many pages the book is definitely a page turner, especially if you are a Napolitano fan.
Ah yes, the second reason for the lack of a 5 star rating ... the story ended nicely bit abruptly. I wanted more.
