The Johnny B. Fast series was written as a response to the "cookie cutter" formula in stories that I have seen cropping up with more and more regularity. These types of stories often have the hero go out on a grand adventure, defeat his or her rivals, and ride off into the sunset, so to speak, without much left to worry about in the end.

What the stories were missing, in my mind, were growth and consequence.

While Johnny B. Fast is a series surrounded by wondrous gadgets and larger than life characters, at its core there is an undercurrent of thematic issues important and prevalent in our daily lives: trust, courage, responsibility, overcoming adversity, doing the right thing.

The characters aren't always brave, they don't always know what to do. They fail, a lot, and get knocked down. They aren't perfect cookie cutter heroes going off on meaningless by-the-numbers adventures.

There is growth, and there are consequences to their actions. It's a big story, with a very far reaching vision. Parts 1-3 add up to just over 110,000 words, and we haven't even finished getting out of the first act of the adventure. Seeds are planted throughout, and weeds, that fester and grow as the story progresses.

I wish I could tell you all right now where the story is going. It's a bigger adventure than I originally intended. Suffice it to say that characters die, others go bad, and some go good. Some are able to redeem themselves, and others stumble under the burden of betraying past responsibilities.

Johnny and Nancy may or may not end up together, but they do grow, and they do face the consequences of their adventure.

These are the types of stories I feel really matter.

I tried this book on one of the promotions, and it turned out to be an enjoyable surprise. There are enough twists and turns to keep kids entertained the entire way through! Lots of fun technology and gadgets.

I downloaded this title for my 11 year old nephew who is an avid reader. He expressed that he enjoyed reading it and then told me every single detail of the story. Will definitely get him Part 2 when it releases.

Wow, I'm not even that into spy stuff but this book made me get into well... SPY STUFF!! :-) I really enjoyed this book and I haven't had the chance to look for part2 but as soon as I finish this review I will look for it definatly. Ok well, ive done my review so let me go look for part2!!!!! :-) :-)
