Johnny Cash reading the phone book gets three stars.
This was a bit stiff for my tastes. I prefer my Johnny more relaxed and homespun. Filmed on FEB 11, 1993 at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin this show finds Johnny entering the twilight of his career but his voice and body are still in good form. The Irish audience were a cold lot on this night and Johnny was working hard to win them over. If you're a fan of The Carter Family than this might be the DVD for you.. Lots of them here (7 Tunes). John Carter Cash steps up and handle "Georgia On A Fast Train". June and Johnny do "Jackson" always a favorite. Kris Kristofferson helps out on "Long Black Veil" & "Big River". But the cream of this is show is when it's just Johnny and the band.. Those are the highlights and worth the cost of the DVD.

This DVD of JOHNNY CASH IN IRELAND in 1993 can be reasonably compared to his concert DVD recorded a year later, JOHNNY CASH -- LIVE AT MONTREAUX 1994. Both are very enjoyable, but IN IRELAND is better, in my opinion!

This concert for TV is very similar to the Johnny Cash TV show format that Johnny had been using for about 25 years, showcasing his many musical friends and relatives in his backing band for much of the stage time, but if you like them like Johnny did (and like I do) then this is a good thing! IN IRELAND has Kris Kristofferson and a much later incarnation of the Carter Family, featuring June, her sister Helen, and June's daughter Rosie (not to be confused with Roseanne, of course). June is more lively and into it all, much more enthusiastically and more relaxed than in the MONTREUX concert, a year later.

All the Carter ladies get to sing lead, and also June and Johnny's son sings lead, and he even gets a loud crowd response when introduced!

All the singing is stronger than on the 1994 MONTREUX DVD, and the TV cameras are a bit more polished and professional than the MONTREUX DVD.

The only way that the MONTREUX DVD beats this one is that it has a 20 minute section of six songs done solo by Johnny Cash with just his guitar, in honor of his 1994 debut album on the American Records label, produced by Rick Rubin, who would revamp Johnny's career with an MTV hit that year, "Delia's Gone." But other than this interesting segment, I think the IN IRELAND is a much better show, more fun, and sounding better.

IN IRELAND can also be compared to the 1971 DVD called JOHNNY CASH IN DENMARK, which is better than both of these 1990s shows! IN DENMARK is Johnny Cash in much younger days, after the drug years were mostly behind him, and enjoying his most lucrative career peak, with two recent live albums recorded in prisons, and a hit TV show in the same era, and featuring Mother Maybelle Carter, June, Helen, and Anita, the Statler Brothers, and Carl Perkins. IN DENMARK is really great, and I would recommend it first, before IN IRELAND.

If you have IN DENMARK already, then you are ready for IN IRELAND, but I would recommend IN DENMARK ahead of this one.

i was there at the concert in dublin in 1993 and it is a great show and well worth the dvd price ,bono and u2 showed up on the night and did a duet with johnny and kris and i hope it makes this dvd . in short any cash fan (just buy it ).......

Any Johnny Cash fan will automatically buy this DVD no matter what I say. :-) I'll say, though, that those who buy Johnny Cash DVDs mainly to see and hear the man himself may be slightly disappointed in this one. It's not that the others can't sing, they are just not that charismatic and some have unpleasant voices.

If all those who get to sing on this DVD were as appealing to the public as some make them to be, they would be stars in their own right and wouldn't have to make guest appearances in Johnny Cash concerts.

Another disappointing fact is the length of the DVD: 49 minutes only. Johnny Cash must have been on stage longer than that. Why were so many songs cut out?

This is an excellent DVD. Johnny cash at his best and in his prime. I would recommend this to all, even if you are not a Cash fan. This is brilliant.

RING OF FIRE is not on this DVD. it is an extremely low budget DVD and I would not recommend purchasing it. He has another DVD, but that doesn't have RING OF FIRE ON it either. I purchased it on other people's recommendations, but am disappointed I did so. I would not recommend it, due to it's very low Quality.

My 61-yr-old brother (he has Down Syndrome) received this concert dvd from Santa Christmas morning. He is VERY picky about what he watches, so "Santa" was concerned that this dvd might go into the stack with all the others he WON'T watch... Santa got it right this time! He has watched and sung the songs over and over and over! Since he is the ultimate Johnny Cash fan, if he likes it, I can pretty much bet that everyone else will, too!

Johnny Cash had one of the most recognized voices of all times. He was also one of the hardest working singers of all times. This concert is a fabulous showcase for the 'man in black' -- a must view for all age groups.

My only negative comment is that this video is on the short side.

The selections are a mixture of chestnuts as well as a few that you don't usually hear at a Cash concert.

Both audio and video are top-notch, Cash is in rare form, and the band and vocal accompaniments are right on.

Didn't care much for the version of Circle, but everything else is excellent

This DVD earned a fourth star from me because this performance marks the last time I am likely to see him perform a whole concert. As a live show, it is probably only worth three stars, but even at that it is quite good.
It gave me an opportunity to have a private uninterrupted goodbye experience with the near mythic performer.
