4.0 out of 5 stars Johnny Depp: Bad Boy or Mr. Nice Guy?
I am a fan of Johnny Depp and have decided to read this autobiography by Brian J. Robb. It is a great little book that focuses on Johnny's career rather than childhood and personal life. If you want to know all about his movies and why he chose to star in them, this is the book for you. Although mainly career orientated, the book does tell about his temper tantrums,...

1.0 out of 5 stars T.M.I. - Too Much Information
I love Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and I think he's a really cool person for sticking to his guns and always being himself, but this book just had waaaaaaay too much information in it. I am a fan of Johnny Depp and have decided to read this autobiography by Brian J. Robb. It is a great little book that focuses on Johnny's career rather than childhood and personal life. If you want to know all about his movies and why he chose to star in them, this is the book for you. Although mainly career orientated, the book does tell about his temper tantrums, profilic girlfreinds, Winona Ryder and Kate Moss and of his great heart. Quite a few nice black and white photos, mainly of his movies, lots of quotes and gives out a feeling that Johnny Depp is a sweet, family man with a big heart trapped in a body of a bad boy who throws temper tantrums and has a zest for kooky movies. Overall, I reallu liked it! Only 158 pages, a lot of them pictures, yet the novel is detailed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly good read, October 22, 2004
By
This review is from: Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel (Paperback)
I loved the old edition of this book back in the nineties and was really excited to find out that it was being updated. It's now got all his new films and shows his transformation from Hollywood bad boy to family man.

It's a really great book - it gives a thorough portrayal of his whole career in films as well as showing us his private life behind the screen. It's also a great read and made me itching to watch some of those old films like 'Ed Wood', as well as eager to see the forthcoming 'Finding Neverland'. The black and white film stills and pictures really complete this tribute to one of the finest actors of our time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Johnny Depp: A modern Rebel, September 2, 2005
This review is from: Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel (Paperback)
I thought this book was very well written. It was informative and the many photos were great. I have read other autobiographies and quite a few were not well written and could not keep my attention. This book was able to keep me wanting to read it to the end. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Johnny Depp.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good., January 3, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel (Paperback)
I am a huge fan of Johnny, and have done a ton of reasearch on him throughout my fandom. I got this book as a gift and instantly started reading it. It is a very good read giving what, I thought, was a sort of different perspective on Johnny's life. This book, to me, was a little long and tedious because of my vast knowledge on him. Many of the information contained in the pages was already my common knowledge but there were also facts and quotes that I had never heard or read about before. Another thing that kept me into the book was the detail put into telling about some of his co-stars and directors, and their history. At times this did slow the book down and became a little tedious, making it hard to remember the book was supposed to be about Johnny. A few times I got lost between quotes and what the author was writing from how the book was set up. The pictures included are very good, though. I felt there was a bit more insight into Johnny's childhood than I had ever previously read about or seen. There was some wrong information, but which is understandable from that information being widely taken as true. Overall this book was quite enjoyable, and a quick read for me. (It only took me three nights to get through.)I would better recommend this book to new Depp fans, although hard-core #1 material fans, like myself, will enjoy this also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revised and updated, October 14, 2006
Perfectly timed for the latest 'Pirates of the Caribbean' blockbuster film is Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel: a biography of the quirky actor whose good looks and lively adventures hide a rebellious young man whose drug-filled adolescence seemed unlikely to create a celebrity. From his volatile relationships and life to his evolving career and interest in independent, adventure-laden roles, is Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel is revised and updated and comes packed with black and white and color photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic, October 11, 2005

This book's format of Johnny Depp's life, movies and unique story is wonderful. I couldn't put it down. Each chapter is a movie title, showing how each part of his life changed during that movie experience. I didn't want to give it 5 stars, it deserves 10 stars!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars T.M.I. - Too Much Information, September 27, 2011
I love Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and I think he's a really cool person for sticking to his guns and always being himself, but this book just had waaaaaaay too much information in it. It took me forever to read this book because it was overwhelming. And a lot of the information wasn't even about Johnny! For some reason the author felt compelled to include background info on directors, other actors, former girlfriends, and more. I didn't pick up this book to read the life story of some obscure movie director - I bought it to read about JOHNNY DEPP!! In describing Cry Baby director John Waters in his childhood days, he says the director was "getting turned on by the Wicked Queen in Walt Disney's Cinderella" movie. There IS NO Wicked Queen in Cinderella (Stepmother, yes. Queen, no)! Obviously the author didn't check all of his facts. With a simple inaccuracy like that, how can I believe anything else I read in here?! I highly suggest your start looking for a different Johnny Depp biography (if you haven't started looking already).

4.0 out of 5 stars good enough, August 2, 2006
I'd give 4 stars to that book just because I wanted to know more about Depp's childhood n stuff, but this book tells mainly about the movies Johnny has chosen. Still, it was an interesting read ! I think I would recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars All about Johnny., August 30, 2005
This review is from: Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel (Paperback)
"Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel" is the first biography I've ever read. I suppose you can't go wrong with a biography about Johnny Depp, but I'm no expert when it comes to biographies and how well they are written and researched. I found the information to be accurate, although there is one movie plot error, the full title of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel has changed since the publishing of this book, and Depp did not star in the movie "Sin City." Most of the information in this book is widely known, even if you aren't a rabid Johnny Depp fan, but I did learn about the many movies he intended to make, but which never began filming or was cut short, due to financial problems. The pictures are nice, and there is a section of color pictures, but mostly black and white photos dominate this biography. The only major problem I encountered was the choppiness which surfaced in chapter eight "Thrill Ride." The jumping of time from "Once Upon a Time in Mexico," "Finding Neverland," and "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" was quite distracting. Instead of writing in order of release, author Brian J. Robb chose to write about the three movies in order of filming, which could lead to confusion. Furthermore, this chapter went back and forth between the movies, instead of focusing on one before moving on to the next movie. If you're interested in Johnny Depp, then this is a good start - I recommend.
