I LOVE THAT POWERFUL VOICE,
By A Customer
This review is from: Johnny Gill (Audio CD)
I always thought Johnny's voice was to powerful for the Bubble Gum group New Edition. He's a great singer, I just wish he could come out with more songs. What are these producers waiting on, they need to invest into Johnny and don't give up because he's the voice. And I love him to death, with his fineeeee self. I would love to let him sing to me and only me for about 2 hours straight. I hope he comes out with something soon.

The thrid time is the charm,
By Derrick Dunn "The Realest DJ" (Woodbridge,VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Johnny Gill (Audio CD)
After releasing two unsuccesful solo CD's, Johnny Gill came into promise when he joined New Edition for their 1988 4x plantium CD Heartbreak. Johnny Gill re-established himself as a solo artist in 1990, and he did so in tremendous fashion, recording an astonishing self-titled debut for Motown that brought together the hitmaking duos Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and L.A. & Babyface to produce an album chock-full of hits. The combination of these two duos was unprecedented. Along with Teddy Riley, they had dominated late-'80s urban radio, utterly and absolutely, churning out hit after hit after hit and co-defining the burgeoning new jack swing movement in the process. Gill likewise had recently experienced enormous success during the late '80s when, following two flat solo albums for Atlantic, he joined New Edition for its Heart Break album and its long run of hits, including "Can You Stand the Rain," a number one hit that featured him prominently. Thus it was only fitting that Motown's visionary teaming of these artists at their respective primes culminated in a set of wonderful songs, chief among them "Rub You the Right Way" (a Jam & Lewis production) and "My, My, My" (L.A. & Babyface). The former was a high-energy, pleading chart-stormer that infiltrated urban radio with brute force and sent Gill straight up the charts in the process; the song furthermore became a coast-to-coast club favorite - and remained so for years upon years afterward, standing tall as one of the definitive new jack swing anthems of the era. The latter was the yin to "Rub You the Right Way"'s yang; it became a quiet storm favorite and even crossed over to the pop and smooth jazz markets, reprising many of the same qualities that had made Babyface's own "Whip Appeal" single such an across-the-board chart-topper only a year earlier. While nothing else on Johnny Gill quite rivaled "Rub You the Right Way" and "My, My, My," the remainder of the album still had more than its fair share of highlights. There was a second round of singles ("Fairweather Friend" was another new jack stepper, "Wrap My Body Tight" another slow jam), as well as a couple of excellent album tracks ("Feels So Much Better" and "Giving My All to You") that could have been hits for anyone else

Best slow CD of all time!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Johnny Gill (Audio CD)
I am a big fan of R&B and have hundreds of CDs full of slow songs. This is by far the best though. The last 5 or 6 songs on the disc are absolute classics. I would recommend this disc to anyone that truly appreciates a good voice and a romantic ballad. I also strongly recommend "Let's Get the Mood Right" by JG.

Badly underrated album that deserves to be heard,

Not to be confused with his signature 1990 album, Johnny Gill's 1983 debut album might disappoint fans of New-Jack Swing, but certainly not those who love the bubblegum-type sound of early New Edition (which didn't feature Gill when this album was released). It did yield one minor R&B hit "Super Love", is well-produced throughout, and features two great songs in "Guilty" and "Half-Steppin." This album is difficult to find (even on tape) so if you see it, grab it.

One of the best New Jack Swing albums!,
By RJ "rjmusic" (rjmusic) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Johnny Gill (MP3 Download)
So i got this album by chance from downloading a huge new jack swing packet. I thought to myself, who's johnny gill? I've heard of sweat, levert, gill, bobby brown, and new edition, but It always seemed to me that most people seemed to forget about his music. Johnny's gill's 1991 album is amazing. It's got slick beats and excellent vocals to back it up. Since michael jackson just died recently, alot of people proclaimed his dangerous album to be the greatest new jack swing album, i strongly disagree I think Johnny Gill's is just as excellent of an album. Fairweather friend is great, rub the right way is one of my favorite title tracks, and I also love my,my,my. It's great dance music, and the beats are interesting to listen to. If your into r&b this album is a must have!

The best Johnny Gill recording still!,

This was one masterpiece recording by JG to this day. The songs on here just touch you in ways imaginable. I got me going with some of my old flames from back in the day. "Provocative and Let's Get The Mood Right" were two nice projects as well, but this one was tops. Unfortunately, JG was overshadowed by a few other artist in the 90's. I think we all know who they are. But JG was and still is one of the great voices of the last 20 years.

One of the best R&B CDs from the early-'90s.,
By
This review is from: Johnny Gill (Audio CD)
Like his idols Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass, Johnny Gill proved equally adept at handling hard-hitting uptempo dance/club tracks and romantic slow-tempo ballads. The Hip-Hop flavored "Rub You The Right Way" was the big hit but the poignant ballads "Giving My All To You", "Lady Dujour", "Just Another Lonely Night" and the Quiet Storm classic "My My My" are this CD's real gems. Johnny Gill was simply one of THE best male R&B vocalists of the 1990s--as well as one (thankfully) NOT afraid to showcase his Gospel and classic R&B roots.

Perfection! This is what an album is supposed to be!,
By
This review is from: Johnny Gill (Audio CD)
We all may remember JG from New Edition's "N.E. Heartbreak" album, or from his timeless duets with Stacy Lattisaw, "Perfect Combination". But, he has to be best remembered as the powerful voice that shined on "My My My".This album has to be one of the best solo albums I have EVER heard. It has a perfect mix of uptempo songs and ballads, with some wonderful production and instrumentation, with some classic lyrics with poweful delivery. Need I say more? The uptempo songs are ultimate classics on any true R&B fan's list. "Rub You the Right Way" has a seriously powerful delivery along with an infectious hook. "Fairweather Friend" has some serious vocal with another catchy hook. "Wrap My Body Tight" has to be the best uptempo song on the album, with another catchy delivery and lovely production. Don't we remember these classics from the early 90s? I know I do! The ballads here all deliver well and could, at anytime, be played at the time of some serious lovemaking. Of course we all know the classic song "My My My" is timeless, with its melodic saxophone in the background as well as Johnny wooing us over with his voice. "Let's Spend the Night" is another classic song for the bedroom. Johnny tests his falsetto and delivers, much like Phillip Bailey of Earth, Wind, and Fire. "Feels So Much Better" is another good song with some lovely lyrics and vocals. "Giving My All To You" has to be the best song on the album with its powerful performance. I know the instrumentals to this song are probably good by themselves. "Lady Dujour" is an ode to your mate, and the lyrics here never falter. Johnny was the ultimate crooner back in the early 90s, even though the R&B market was saturated with others back then. Johnny stood out above them with his churchy vocals and Billboard-topping singles. Even so, the album never dips below the singles' peak. Cop this album if you want something seriously worth calling R&B!!! |
