This review is from: Johnny May's Guide to Preventing Identity Theft (Paperback)
Identity theft has gained an increasing amount of attention with the upsurge in incidents that cost the victims thousands of dollars and untold hours to clean up the mess caused by the thieves. This book, written by an independent security consultant specializing in identity theft, presents a wealth of fascinating facts about the crime, its growth, how to prevent it, and what to do if you're a victim.

One of the facts brought out in the book highlights the importance of prevention: the average reporting time-discovery-of the crime is fourteen months after the damage has been done! Consider this little book to be a wake-up call and heed the advice carefully.

The first 91 pages are devoted to an insightful-and sometimes astonishing-report of what identity theft is all about. Readers will gain a broad education and learn about vulnerabilities they'd never even dreamed of! With the problem clearly delineated, May spends the balance of the book providing a comprehensive listing of resources, advice, and tools for prevention and response.

This book should be read carefully by anyone with a credit card, social security number, driver's license, checking account... Get it? Everyone! Employers will benefit from the book, as well, particularly if their employees-or others (explained in the book)-have access to personal information about employees, customers, or even suppliers.

Highly recommended. Content and readability give this book a great return on your investment of the purchase and reading time.

I found the detail in this book regarding what to do if your identity is stolen the most helpful. Johnny May details the steps to take in reporting identity theft very thoroughly.

This review is from: Johnny May's Guide to Preventing Identity Theft (Paperback)
I read the book and thought it was an outstanding book. Mr. May really takes his time explaining it. I have also had Mr. May as an instructor for this topic in college and it was a very informitve class.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mostly copied out of another book!, December 7, 2008
This review is from: Johnny May's Guide to Preventing Identity Theft (Paperback)
This booklet is largely hung on the framework of Chapter 9 of a book I wrote, "Travel Advisory: How to Avoid Thefts, Cons, and Scams." Mr. May bought "Travel Advisory" before he came out with his booklet. His is 158 sparse pages, 28 of which are blank. 17 are sample letter templates. 18 pages quote acts (ID Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act, and Personal Information Security Act).

That leaves 95 pages. I estimate that "Travel Advisory's" Chapter 9 is about 16,000 words, while the 95 written pages of May's booklet contain about 17,000 words (I'm being generous). Much of May's material and organization comes from Chapter 9 of "Travel Advisory" and elsewhere in the book. Some is copied word-for-word.

I do not lightly accuse Mr. May of copying. He has a documented history of outright plagiarism for which, when confronted by the author (me), he wrote, apologizing "for the inconvenience," adding "I am human and humans do make mistakes. Again, please accept my apology." His previous work of plagiarism comprised mostly word-for-word copying and was published under his name. With no repercussions, May continues to lift the writing of others. This work should be pulled from Amazon and other sellers.
