Book Description

Everyone had given up on the lost children. The parents have destroyed and - as well as possible, rebuilt their lives. THen the phone rings, and a father hears his daughter's voice. Everything changes. What happens When four fathers venture onto the reclusive Johnny "Junk" Curtis's property in search of their missing children is far worse than their imaginations could have conceived. In a castle of booby traps and junk, they uncover secrets better left alone - and meet the truth behind the legend of "Johnny Junk."

'A Surreal breath of nightmare. Johnny Junk is the kind of emotional, gut-wrenching horror that sticks with you and comes to visit late at night. You'll never look at an abandoned appliance in the same way again." -- David Niall Wilson - author of The DeChance Chronicles & Deep Blue

This story was the first I've read by Brian Knight, though I've had his novel Feral sitting on my bookshelf for quite a while and just never got around to reading it.

Johnny Junk surprised me. I'm not even sure you could call it a horror story, though it certainly has horror elements. It's a very emotional story that pulls at your heartstrings and really makes you care about the three main characters who brave the junkyard to find their missing children. Knight does an excellent job getting the reader to want these characters to succeed.

In addition to the excellent characterization and the emotional quality of the piece, there's also the action. Most of the story involves the main characters trying to get through the labyrinth of a junkyard, while avoiding booby traps. I was kept on the edge of my seat the entire time and I read the entire story in one sitting.

One of the best things about the story is its opening. Knight starts it off at exactly the right point to make you want to find out what the hell is going on. There are no parts of this story that drag or feel like they were put in to pad the word count.

Endings are difficult to pull off, but Knight succeeds with this one. I found it a very original ending and I very much admired Knight's imagination. It was definitely not what I expected and it lined up perfectly with the set up at the beginning of the tale.

All in all, this a short, tightly written tale. The only thing that disappointed me about it was reaching the end.

This story deeply moved me, proving that even a short work can pack a wallop of a punch in the hands of a gifted author.

The children are missing. Not just from one family but from several. Over the course of years children in the small town have disappeared without a trace leaving their families bereft and forever changed. No evidence has ever been found, no one has been arrested although many have come under suspicion.

But one father has received a mysterious phone call in the middle of the night. Through his alcoholic haze he is sure the voice of his daughter was on the line, telling him, begging him, pleading with him to come and find her. As the police refuse to listen to his drunken ramblings he takes the matter into his own hands, enlisting the help of other fathers in his search for their children.

What they find is the stuff of nightmares and will leave the reader breathless. There may even be tears.
