Biography

The fourth of seven children, John Royce Mathis was born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas to Clem and Mildred Mathis. As a small boy, the family moved to Post Street in San Francisco. It was there that he learned an appreciation of music from his father who taught him his first song, “My Blue Heaven”. At age eight, his father purchased an old upright piano for $25. When he brought it home,… Read more in Amazon's Johnny Mathis Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Chemistry That Should Have Never Ended, September 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Johnny (Audio CD)
Great singers must have great voices and Mathis is one of the best in America. However that's not enough. A big arranger must complete the chemistry. And here the arranger is Don Costa, the long Sinatra collaborator who has also teamed with Mathis for three albums on Columbia Records and two ones on Mercury/Global Records. JOHNNY is the second Mathis-Costa collaboration and the result is astonishingly wonderful. All stars to the bolero arrangement of Cole Porter's I Love You. Now Columbia/Sony has the following Mathis/Costa CD balance due: Rapture (1964), Romantically (1965), The Sounds of Christmas (Global, 1966), and Tender is The Night (Global, 1965).

5.0 out of 5 stars Mathis Starting To Stretch And Succeeding, January 1, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Johnny (Audio CD)
I had this album on vinyl when I was a teenager in High School and loved it then. Johnny really starts to look for ways to improve his vocalizations on this album. Having the Master of Conductors, Don Costa, certainly made this a terrific set. Unfortunately, Mathis left Columbia for Mercury the same year he released this record. He was searching for more creativity, and if you have the pleasure of listening to the 2 CD set Global Masters, you'll see he found what he was looking for.
