Downtown Down Under,
By
This review is from: Johnny Ray's Downtown (CD/Book) (Audio CD)
Down Under singer-songwriter Perry Keyes is a prodigious talent. Johnny Ray is his third album since his 2005 debut, Meter, an 18-track double album, which he followed up with Last Ghost Train Home (2007). His latest offering - 75 minutes of gritty, in-your-face human stories - is another gem, this time with 16 songs, delivered in Keyes' appropriately world-weary tones, though he has the flexability to easily jump up-tempo for up-beat turns.
Keyes inhabits the shadowy quarters of his Sin City environs, getting down to the seamier side of the streets among the desperate, the parasites, the human flotsam and jetsom of downstream society. His sense of place is firmly rooted in his native inner-Sydney. |
