This cap gun is EXCELLENT!
Arnold R.
As he is probably the only one of his friends with a toy gun like this (yes, it is very desirable when they come over), this hasn't been an issue.

These are made of metal, have weight to them, very nice quality.

I bought 3 of these guns. The Big Tex Holster Set was for myself. Billy the Kid 8 Shot Cap Gun for my 4 yr. old who needs 2 hands to pull the trigger. And a Johnny Reb Pistol & Holster Set for my 7 yr. old daughter.

Big Tex is the biggest of the 3 and will fit the hands of an adult (male, medium/large hands) comfortably. The Johnny Reb is slightly bigger than the Billy the Kid gun. But the handle and trigger assembly of both the Johnny Reb and Billy the Kid are about the same size as the black plastic 8 shot cap guns found at various retailers. The bigger size of the Big Tex makes it easier to spin the gun with your index in the trigger guard than the other 2 cap guns. Great when you just finished your duel and you want to re-holster your gun with some style. It can be done with the other 2 cap guns but not on the vertical plane.

The better one of the three in material is the Billy the Kid. The catch that holds the front section of the gun to the trigger assembly is metal. Both the Big Tex and Johnny Reb's are made of plastic. Other reviewers have stated that through time, these will break. This was a concern of mine but I knew that if I could take the gun apart, I could fabricate another out of aluminum. This maybe the deciding factor for you if you want a quality gun that will last more than a season or two of play.

The loudest of the three is the Big Tex cap gun. There is definitely a distinct ring to the sound when you fire it. The other 2 cap guns are muffled when fired. It's safer for the kids but takes away from the characteristic of it being a better cap gun. The only drawback of the Big Tex cap gun is that it's a 12 shot. 12 shot rounds are more expensive, have suffered in quality in manufacturing and are not as loud as the 8 shot rounds are.

This cap gun is EXCELLENT! We bought it for my son at an amusement park & I have to say I was literally thrilled to see it is made in Italy & NOT China! Dont give in to this "everything is made in China" nonsense, its simply not the case - search a little harder & spend a couple of bucks more & get quality products:-)

I got this gun for my boyfriend's Indiana Jones costume for halloween. The gun was alot nicer than we thought. It's got some weight to it which was nice compared to the plastic guns. I bet a little boy would love this almost as much as my big boy does.

This is a great play gun -- the nicest one I've seen for kids! It appears to be very well-made (it's actually kind of heavy!) and the design is clean with complementary details. The holster included is a fun addition, however, we have noticed that the gun sometimes slips out the back when the kids are playing around. We have not put caps in it, so I can't comment on how those work, but my son loves playing with it and was *ecstatic* to receive it for Christmas.

**UPDATE: The barrel is completely removable, which is a really fun play feature, however, ours was removed during playtime outside and now is MIA, likely buried somewhere and will never been seen again! Just so you know...

Santa brought my son (4 yo) this gun for Christmas. It is now almost 2 months and it still works very well. Some things you might want to know: 1- When installing the caps, make sure you press each one down onto the pin in the cylinder. Seating the caps helps it make for a louder pop. 2- When you "break" the barrel to open it, the cylinder is removable and makes for easier loading of the caps. 3- Put a cloth or rag in the holster overnight so it stretches out and the gun can be removed easier. 4- I was surprised at how many places still sell the caps for these guns. Look around because they are far cheaper than ordering online.

I purchased a "Johnny Reb" cap gun to use as a prop for a short Civil War film I'm making with my kids. As a prop for kids it's perfect, but as a cap gun not so much. The patina is attractive and the CSA holster will serve quite well. But the mechanism is junk. There's no way to eject the ring of caps, so you'll need to pry them out with a pointy thing. As others point out, the cylinder is removable (historically accurate, sorta, but not great for a toy). The indexing mechanism is iffy, so the hammer may or may not hit a cap from shot to shot. And it's not loud at all -- it just kinda pops half-heartedly. There's some kind of plastic thing at the front end of the cylinder that keeps the noise and smoke from coming out. I tried prying it out but just ended up shoving it toward the back of the cylinder.

On the plus side, the trigger/hammer mechanism feels solid and reliable. It's double-action only (pull the trigger until it fires; you can't cock the hammer and then fire) so it has less failure points. Unless your kids are like mine they'll never know the difference.
