Johnny Ryan is the one-man MAD magazine behind the quarterly comic-book series, Angry Youth Comix. He has made a name (Rolling Stone called him 2005's "Hot Cartoonist," based on much of the work from this collection) and built a cult audience with his audacious sense of humor, mixing absurdist slapstick, social parody, and a compulsion for the profane that borders on the Promethean in its rejection of self-censorship (the very title of this book may give some indication). Complaining that Ryan's comics are grossly offensive, stupid and juvenile is like complaining that water is wet: that's the entire point. The raison d'être of Ryan's work is pushing beyond the limits of tasteless humor into pure gross-out overload; the joke isn't the punch line itself, but how horrible the punch line is. This collection mostly compiles short stories from his Angry Youth Comics series, featuring recurring characters Boobs Pooter, Blecky Yuckerella, Loady McGee and Sinus O'Gynus, as well as his single-panel gag cartoons. (Sample caption: Whoa! Check out the size of the tits on that concentration camp! Actually, most of Ryan's jokes are unrepeatable in this magazine.) Ryan's sense of outrageousness is as tediously limited as a sixth-grader's; his repertoire is almost entirely excretory and/or sexual, with the odd decapitation or racist gag thrown in for variety. Occasionally, there's a flash of actual wittiness, like his brief, scatological condensations of Charles Burns's Black Hole and Craig Thompson's Blankets. Mostly, though, it's poop jokes, drawn in a flat bigfoot style that recalls old Playboy cartoonists without their élan or whimsy. A page or two of Ryan, if you're in exactly the right mood, can be nasty fun. An entire book's worth is just about unbearable. (Sept.)

They're hilarious comedy gags. You know, goofs. Gooofaroonies. If you're from Wichita and you take things too seriously, you might not like this book. If you're just a regular person who likes comedy ha ha's and isn't afraid of a little "blue humor," you will like this book.

...but I must admit to getting many a guilty giggle out of this collection. Johnny Ryan never seems afraid to take a gag into the furthest reaches of taste and depravity, or care about who he offends.The jokes are sometimes hit or miss and often recurring ideas do wear a bit thin. But, for every mild fart or penis gag, there's always a retarded Hitler or rapist detective waiting around the corner for a final, hideous payoff. If the humour of South Park and Viz is a little too mild for your taste, you're sure to love Ryan's material.
