3.0 out of 5 stars HIGH-TECH
First of all I would like to say that I like JW very much! but this DVD is terrible! It's like a pirated VCD. When we speak of DVD, it comes to our mind of high-tech. In this DVD there's nothing high-tech. The songs which he performed by the way are all excellent, the quality of sound is fair and the quality of the picture is the worst I've ever seen.

If you're a JW die...

I received the Johnny Winter DVD today. I share the opinion of others here that have reviewed this DVD. The sound quailty Is not up to snuff. It was mixed to sterio obviously from an old VHS format. You can hear the hiss at times. Also the video quality is lacking in a few of the songs. The DVD is made up of different concerts culled together to form this DVD, with a little biographical material thrown in. All critisims aside, If your a die hard Johnny Winter fan like I am and most of the others that reviewed this DVD seem to be, then you will love this DVD. It's a pretty good retrospective. Johnny seemed to be in a Trio format for most of the songs. I would have loved to see him perform with Rick Derringer as I did in person back in the 70s. Most of the performances are really inspired in spite of the video and audio quality.I hope Johnny decides to make another DVD with his current band. He still performs! and that they mix it to 5.1 or better yet DTS. I knock off a point for the sound and picture quality but It's still a great DVD to have in your collection.

Yes, some video clips leave something to be desired in VIDEO quality (what do you want, they're vintage clips!!!!!), but if you want some of the best guitar work on the planet to tear your head off, this is IT. Especially if you are a guitarist, this is a MUST SEE. His vocals are in top form, too!(for all you video prima donnas, gimme a break... it's not that bad). Too bad he won't be recognized as the master he is until he's dead.

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU HEARD THE REST , NOW SEE THE BEST, April 9, 2001
By

This video will demonstrate how great a guitarist Johnny Winter is. The quality of the film could have been better, but I guess the original footage was fair. The video quality is great from the point of Mad Dog to the last song from Spain. Then Highway 61 is on a low side. There was a sound problem from the get go at MSG. There is no player dead or alive who could play like Johnny. His long jams never get played out. Notes, cords are pure, clear and fluent. His guitar does the talking. The best blues player ever. Sit down, and enjoy the the show. If you don't agree with my assessment of the greatness of JW'S playing, well then maybe I should keep listening to others or should I say looking for others, but I covered everyone already.....Enjoy

If you're a JW die hard fan, think twice before buying this DVD. I recommend that you buy his albums instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome History, October 18, 2003

I love the variety and the history of one of the truly greatest blues guitarists of all time. I love the way this show is layed out and how the old recordings are injected between newer recordings. If you just remotely like Johnny Winter's music and style, this is a good DVD, but if you love his music and style, then this is a must have.

2.0 out of 5 stars OVER ALL POOR QUALITY, February 11, 2004
By
This review is from: Johnny Winter: Pieces & Bits (DVD)
It was great just to have something of Johnny's on DVD, but it just seems like it was thrown together. Poor sound for sure, picture is so so, but overall a must have for die hard fans like myself. I have enjoyed Johnny since the early 70s, I hope for more from him in the near future. So buyer beware this is what it says, pieces & bits.

4.0 out of 5 stars Getting to have any of JW on dvd is worth 4 stars!, August 6, 2002

This review is from: Johnny Winter: Pieces & Bits (DVD)
Yep, the other reviewers were right when speaking of the quality
of many of the performances on here. The quality is poor, but i'll take any footage of JW possible. Since on Johnny's website
(just use his name to get there)they are asking for anyone with
film footage or more recent video footage to send it in, I guess
JW will do another dvd? I certainly hope he can get the Mid Nite Special & other tv show film of him, as i'd personally like to
see it all, especially any Johnny Winter And footage. So this time JW make sure it's all top notch quality. STEVEN MUNARI

2.0 out of 5 stars To Bad - He deserves better, April 18, 2002
This review is from: Johnny Winter: Pieces & Bits (DVD)
After viewing the DVD, and shaking off the feeling of being ripped off, I pulled out all the VHS material I've collect on Johnny. Sure enough, most of the material was there, minus the interviews of course, clean video and pretty decent sound. I can't say that about the DVD. Most of the material was copied from the VHS format, the better being "Guitar Greats", and they would have been better off using the tapes I have to copy from.
If you're a true fan of the best blues guitar man alive, buy it. If you're looking for the video footage that you thought would be crisp and clear, and audio that would knock your socks off, you better wait till someone puts together something that this man deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Details, December 14, 2007
This review is from: Johnny Winter: Pieces & Bits (DVD)
The songs "Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo," Stranger," and "Sweet Papa John" are excellent and are from a 1984 concert video which I own. The whole video is 45 minute long and is a complete concert. "Mad Dog," "When You Got A Good Friend," "Don't Take Advantage Of Me," and "Mojo Boogie," are also well done. These are all from Johnny Winter's second comeback period. The last song is from Bob Dylan's 1993 birthday at Madison Square Garden. It is a wonderful performance of Johnny's signature tune " Highway 61 Revisited."
